PALM SPRINGS -- Solid pitching led the way for the BYU softball team that finished the Cathedral Classic with an 8-0 win over Tennessee Teach Saturday.
The win snapped a five-game slump the Cougars fell into and leaves the team 7-9 on the season.
Both BYU pitchers made appearances in the game, throwing a combined two-hitter with six strikeouts.
The runs came in doubles as three Cougars totaled two RBI apiece. Junior Andrea Ramirez finished the day 2-for-2 with a 2-RBI single, sophomore Caschjen Davis added an RBI single and freshman Coreen Lopez hit a 2-RBI double.
Sophomore Jessica Purcell got the Cougars going in the first inning with a two-out RBI single through the right side, to bring in junior Angeline Quiocho who stole second.
The single run was all BYU need to maintain a lead as junior Christi Zinanti commanded the game from the circle. The right-hander allowed one hit in the second inning, but was otherwise flawless through 3.1 innings.
The defense backed up pitchers’ performances with their first-errorless game of the season, while the offense furthered the lead in the top of the third. Purcell walked and a double from Ramirez left two runners on for Davis. Davis singled to center field to bring about both runners.
Sophomore Paige Affleck came in to relieve Zinanit with one out in the fourth inning. She finished the day allowed one hit over 2.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Back-to-back singles from Quiocho and Pucell made way for a two-RBI single up the middle from Ramirez in the top of the fourth inning. Davis walked to put two runners on for Lopez, who doubled to bring in both runners.
Quiocho hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to give the Cougars their eighth run. Affleck held Tennessee Tech scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, for the eight-run rule to be enacted, giving BYU a 8-0 win after six innings.
The Cougars continue play on Feb. 27 when they take on Iowa State and Wisconsin in a doubleheader at the Long Beach State Tournament.
