Cougars Drop Two in Doubleheader

Image

LAS -- The BYU women’s softball team dropped both games of a Friday doubleheader at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, as the team fell to 5-4 on the season after losing to No. 6 Michigan, 4-2, and Louisville, 3-2.

Against Michigan BYU managed to come back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game before costly errors allowed the Wolverines to finish with a 4-2 win.

The Cougars totaled five hits off of the Michigan pitching staff that struck out a combined 13 BYU batters. Amanda Vance was 1-for-2 with a solo home run, while Kristin Delahoussaye went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.

Paige Affleck received the loss for the Cougars. The sophomore hurler dropped to 2-2 on the season. Affleck allowed four runs, two earned, off of six hits.

After a scoreless first inning, a hit batsman and a walk put two Michigan runners on base, and both scored off of a double, hit down the right field line.

With a 2-0 deficit the Cougars battled in the top of the third inning. Freshman Coreen Lopez led off the inning with a single to left field. Delahoussaye brought Lopez in with a single, before Michigan retired the Cougars.

In the fourth inning Michigan mounted a scoring threat with a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. Yet, the aggressive play of the Wolverines was cut short by the strong arm a sophomore catcher Jessica Purcell with a pick off down to second base.

Junior Amanda Vance evened out the score with a leadoff solo homer in the top of the fifth inning. The homer retired Michigan pitcher JordanTaylor who was relieved by Nikki Nemitz.

Two fielding errors in the top of the fifth inning gave Michigan two unearned runs before the Cougars retired the side.

Nemitz managed to control the game, receiving the win after tossing three hitless innings.

In the second game of the doubleheader Louisville got a single run in the first inning that the Cougars managed to match with an RBI single from Purcell to score Delahoussaye from third.

Junior Christie Zinanti allowed two doubles to leadoff the second inning that scored a run, and a solo homer in the third inning to give Louisville a two-run lead over BYU.

The Cougar offense was unable to generate runs, stranding three baserunners through four innings. Purcell managed to reach first after getting hit by a pitch, and a single to right field from Lopez brought Purcell around the base paths.

With two runners on base and only one out in the sixth inning Louisville managed to execute two quick outs to end the inning and the BYU scoring threat.

In the seventh inning Messerschmidt walked to reach based but she was left stranded by the final outs of the game.

The Cougars look to improve their play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic when they face Southern Miss at 9 a.m. and UC Davis at 11:15 Saturday.
