Doubleheader Ends in Two Loses

Image

PALM SPRINGS -- Facing some of its toughest competitors yet, BYU (9-3) lost both games of its first doubleheader against Oklahoma St., 3-1, and No. 1 Washington, 7-0 at the Cathedral Classic.

In their first game against Oklahoma St., the Cougars managed to out hit the Cowgirls 5-3, but couldn’t turn those hits into runs.

BYU’s one run came in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman J.C. Clayton reached first on a fielder’s choice.

While Kristin Delahoussaye was at bat, Clayton stole second and then advanced to third after an Oklahoma St. wild throw in an attempt to pick her off.

With Clayton on third, Tiffany Messerschmidt singled down the left-field line bringing Clayton home to score the Cougar's only run for the day.

Messerschmidt led the Cougars offensively with two hits on three at-bats.

Amanda Kellum, J.C. Clayton and Angie Quiocho also had one hit each in the game.

Paige Affleck continued to show improvement and accuracy from the mound. Affleck pitched all seven innings facing 30 batters, striking out four, walking two and only giving up three hits.

In the second game of their doubleheader, the Cougars played their toughest opponent yet as they faced No. 1 Washington.

The Huskies got off to a quick start scoring four runs in the first inning, and two in the second.

Jessica Fitu got the only Cougar hit against Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie which came in the top of the fifth.

Lawrie’s performance was near perfect as she kept BYU to one hit and only walked one batter.

In the bottom of the second, BYU freshman right-handed pitcher, Hannah Howell, came in to test her skills against No. 1 Washington. Howell showed she was up to the task by retiring her first three batters in a row to end the inning.

In the end, Howell pitched four out of the six innings played and gave up two runs off of five hits. She faced 20 batters, struck out seven and walked two.

The Cougars return to the field tomorrow to play their second doubleheader against Cal Poly SLO and No. 2 Arizona at 12:30 p.m. (PST) and 3 p.m. (PST) respectively. Lives stats can be found at www.byucougars.com.

Facing No. 1 and 2 at Classic

Image

PROVO -- Returning from tournaments with a winning record two weeks in a row, No. 25 BYU (9-1) looks to face five teams, including No. 1 Washington, and No. 2 Arizona, at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. beginning Thursday.

“We are looking forward to competing in this tournament as we play some of the toughest teams we face all season,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “We will have to work for our wins, and this tournament will really show us what we are made of. I have no doubt that we will do great.”

The Cathedral City Classic is one of the premiere Division I softball tournaments in the country, with nine ranked teams from top-25 polls participating.

The Cougars lead off their tournament play with a double header against Oklahoma St. on Thursday at 1 p.m. (PST), and then No. 1 Washington at 8:30 p.m. (PST). This will be the second year in a row BYU has faced a No. 1 ranked team in this tournament as last year they faced then ranked No. 1 Alabama.

BYU will return to the field the next day, Friday, for another doubleheader against Cal Poly SLO at 12:30 p.m. (PST) followed by its second ranked team, No. 2 Arizona, at 3 p.m. (PST).

The Cougars wrap up their Cathedral Classic by playing Long Island at 10 a.m. (PST) on Saturday and then head home.

Live stats for the Cathedral City Classic are available at www.byucougars.com. A complete Cathedral Classic schedule can be found at the top of this article in a PDF file.
