COLLEGE STATION, Texas, (March 5, 2010) – Day two for the Cougars (13-4) continued in winning fashion starting with a scoring rampage against Monmouth, 17-0, and ending with a come-from-behind win over No. 19 Texas A&M, 5-4, for the second day in a row.
“We played two quality games today and put forth a solid team effort on the field,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “Today we played hard for two full games and demonstrated the quality of this team. I am very pleased with where we are right now.”
BYU started the day off right with an impressive win over Monmouth that only went to five innings.
The Cougars tallied 14 hits during the game which included three multi-run homers, two doubles and the rest base hits.
Andrea Ramirez only seemed capable of only hitting home runs as she homered two out of three at-bats. Ramirez also led the team in RBI during the game with five.
Jessica Fitu was right behind Ramirez in RBI with four thanks to a RBI single in the first and a three-run shot in the fourth.
Krista Hicks and Angie Quiocho accounted for two RBI a piece, and J.C. Clayton, Whitney Thomas, Amy Holt and Tiffany Messerschmidt each had one.
Paige Affleck was terrific from the mound for the second game in a row. Affleck faced 14 batters and only gave up two hits in the 3 innings she pitched.
Eakin has commented several times about Affleck’s variety in pitches, and pitch placement thus far in the season, noting the improvements she has made through hard work and dedication.
In the second game of their doubleheader, the Cougars fell quickly to No. 19 Texas A&M 4-0 in the middle of the second inning.
Right-handed pitcher Christie Zinanti struggled slightly from the mound which allowed freshman right-handed pitcher Hannah Howell to prove her skills against a nationally ranked team.
Howell to date has pitched against all ranked opponents including No.1 Washington, No. 2 Arizona and No. 9 Georgia Tech.
“Hannah did a terrific job keeping them off balance tonight giving up only three hits in the five innings she pitched,” Eakin said. “She has really improved and the experience she gained from playing a team of this caliber is tremendous.”
In the bottom of the third, BYU responded with two runs of its own.
The scoring drive started when Clayton walked, and then was brought home when Kristin Delahoussaye doubled. The very next at-bat, Quiocho bunted down the third base line, advancing Delahoussaye to third. Quiocho made it safely to first thanks to an Aggie throwing error which sent Delahoussaye home to score.
BYU scored again in the fourth when Amanda Kellum sent a one-run shot over the left field wall bringing the Cougars within one.
With Howell keeping the Aggies quiet offensively, the Cougars were able to focus on what they needed to do at their last at-bat, in the bottom of the sixth, to win.
Fitu started the inning by reaching first on a fielding error but was tagged out at second on a fielder’s choice which allowed Ramirez to make it to first.
Kellum reached first on another Aggie error, and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Meanwhile, Ramirez advanced to third.
With two on, and only one out, Amber Price sent a hard-hit ground ball to shortstop and reached first on a third Texas A&M error which sent both runners on second and third home to score giving BYU a 5-4 lead.
No. 19 Texas A&M had one more chance to score during its last at-bat in the top of the seventh, but was unable to get a hit as Howell retired the side in order.
The Cougars return to the field Saturday for one more doubleheader against Monmouth at 10 a.m. (CT) and Northern Colorado at 12:15 p.m. (CT).
