COLLEGE STATION -- With five games played in three days, BYU completed its Texas A&M Invitational bout as the only undefeated team in the tournament after beating Monmouth, 9-6, and Northern Colorado, 9-0 in five innings on Saturday.
Although Monmouth was the first to score after a two-RBI double in the first, BYU was quick to answer at its first at-bat in the bottom of the inning.
Kristin Delahoussaye started the Cougars' offensive game with a lead-off single. She advanced to second when J.C. Clayton bunted. Clayton made it safe to first on a Monmouth throwing error which also allowed Delahoussaye to advance to third.
Angie Quiocho was next at the plate, and she walked. During Quiocho’s at-bat, Delahoussaye stole home on a passed ball, scoring the Cougars' first run.
Andrea Ramirez gave BYU its next run after she singled to left field which allowed Quiocho to score.
In the bottom of the third, the Cougars loaded the bases as Quiocho, Jessica Fitu and Ramirez all singled to left field. Amanda Kellum picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed Quiocho to tag and score.
Monmouth rallied scoring four runs and retook the lead, 6-3.
BYU got back within one in the bottom of the fourth after Delahoussaye doubled and then scored after Clayton singled to right field. Clayton rounded first but was called out at second. With the bases empty, Quiocho sent a one-run shot over the leftfield wall.
The Cougars struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning retaking the lead after Delaney Willard singled to left, bringing in two runs. Immediately following, Alexandra Hudson and Jessica Dugas both singled, leaving the bases loaded for Quiocho who picked up two more RBI off a single to deep centerfield.
All three pitchers threw during the Cougars' game against Monmouth. Christie Zinanti started and played for almost one full inning until she was replaced by Hannah Howell. Howell pitched until the top of the fifth inning, and then was replaced by Paige Affleck.
Combined, BYU’s pitching allowed seven hits off 31 batters faced.
In the second game of their doubleheader, against Northern Colorado, the Cougars picked up where they left off, against Monmouth, mentally, offensively and defensively.
In BYU’s first at-bat, Delahoussaye started with a walk, and then advanced to second when Clayton singled to left. Quiocho came up next, connected on her first pitch and hit a three-run homer.
Two batters later, Ramirez hit a one-run shot to right-center field bring the Cougars score to 4-0.
In the bottom of the second, both Willard and Dugas walked, and then Delahoussaye advanced both runners to second she bunted down the third base line. Both runners scored when Clayton doubled to center, picking up two RBI.
Fitu singled to right field which brought Clayton home, and then Fitu advanced to second after Northern. Colorado committed a throwing error. Ramirez picked up an RBI when she singled to center allowing Fitu to score.
In the bottom of the third, Amy Holt picked up her second RBI of the season after she hit a single to left field, bringing Quiocho home.
With these two wins earned today, BYU is the only team who leaves the Texas A&M Invitational undefeated.
The Cougars head home today to rest and prepare themselves for the Arizona State Tournament in Tempe, Ariz., which starts on Friday.

PROVO -- For the fourth time in BYU softball history, the team heads down to College Station, TX today to take part in the Texas A&M Invitational.
Scheduled to play four games in three days, the Cougars (10-4) will face their fourth ranked opponent, No. 19 Texas A&M, for the third week in a row.
“These tournaments and ranked opponents have been great experiences for us and we welcome the challenges that come with them,” said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. “This team can definitely compete at that level. I am really proud of what we have accomplished so far and look forward to our future as we continue to improve.”
No. 9 Georgia Tech, No. 1 Washington and No. 2 Arizona are BYU’s list of ranked opponents this season and although the Cougars have lost these games, Eakin is pleased with how his team has battled.
