TEMPE -- No. 23 ranked BYU (16-5) ended its first day of play at the Arizona State Tournament after beating Nebraska, 5-1, and losing to No. 10 ASU, 1-9.
The Cougars' first game against Nebraska highlighted the team's defensive abilities mingled with offensive explosions.
"We played a solid game against Nebraska who is a very impressive team," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "This game showed what we are capable of."
Paige Affleck held the Huskers to just six hits in seven innings, giving up only one run which came at the top of the third.
"Paige continues to throw great and today's game against Nebraska was no exception," Eakin said. "Her pitch count was right and she met our pitching goals which are to to give up two walks or less."
Affleck met that goal by only walking two Huskers.
This week’s Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, Angie Quiocho gave the Cougars an offensive lift as she tallied two hits during the game consisting of a double and a two-run homer.
Quiocho has nine doubles and six home runs now on the season, and leads BYU offensively with a .516 batting average.
Six other Cougars got a hit against Nebraska including Andrea Ramirez, 2, Alexandra Hudson, 1, J.C. Clayton, 1, Amanda Kellum, 1, Delaney Willard, 1 and Caschjen Atagi, 1.
Willard picked up two RBI in the bottom of the second with a single to mid-centerfield bringing Kellum and Ramirez home.
Kristin Delahoussaye brought in BYU’s fifth and last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after grounding out to second which allowed Jessica Dugas to score on a fielder’s choice.
In their second game against No. 10 Arizona St., the Cougars were held just one run off of five hits.
Due to day-to-day injuries with senior pitcher Christie Zinanti, Affleck stepped to the mound again.
"Paige gave it her all and we definitely appreciate that," Eakin said. "Arizona State is a great team. We need better execution in the short game, better placement of balls with runners in position and limit walks if we are compete with them tomorrow and win."
Zinanti has been suffering from rib and back pain which was aggravated at the end of last season and has progressively gotten worse.
"Christie is a fighter and she will give her all to this team," Eakin said. "However, what is more important to us is that she gets the rest she needs to make a full recovery."
BYU’s lone run came at the top of the fourth when Hudson shot a single right up the middle sending Quiocho home to score.
"We are playing well so far and our confidence is still high. We are not discouraged from this loss by any means. Instead, we are optimistic for tomorrow's challenges and look forward to competing against two great teams," Eakin said.
In the end, Arizona St. proved too much as it scored nine runs off seven hits.
All five Cougar loses have come from ranked teams this season.
BYU returns to the field Saturday to close their Diamond Devil Invitational with a doubleheader against Pacific at 10 a.m. and Arizona St. at 3 p.m.

PROVO -- With two ranked victories under its belt, BYU (15-4) heads to Tempe, Arizona to face its fifth ranked team, and host, No. 10 Arizona State.
BYU’s Tournament begins on Friday, with a doubleheader against Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. and No. 10 Arizona St. at 5 p.m. BYU returns to the field the next day to face Pacific at 10 a.m. and No. 10 Arizona St. at 3 p.m.
BYU enters this tournament ranked as well, as it has climbed back into to the polls reaching No. 23 in the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Top 25 Poll. The team also placed rankings in the Ultimate College Softball Coaches Poll at No. 22.
Although this is the second time this season the Cougars have found themselves in a ranked position, BYU head coach Gordon Eakin remains focused on the end result.
“These rankings reflect how hard we are working this season, and we are honored to be ranked among the best teams in the nation,” Eakin said. “However, what we are focused on most as a team is making it past regionals into super regionals and beyond. We don't want to put too much emphasis on our current rankings. Instead we want to keep our eyes focused on our end goal of going further than ever before."
The Cougars have five-straight appearances to post-season NCAA Regionals, but have yet to make it to Super Regionals or beyond and are working to make this their first year to do so.
Live stats and live audio for the Arizona State Tournament can be found on www.byucougars.com.
