Quiocho Denies Utes

PROVO -- Before the largest crowd in the history of Gail Miller Field, Angie Quiocho's three-run homer broke open a tie game, giving BYU a 4-1 win over Utah in the conference opener on Friday.

The crowd of 1,484 watched in person and others tuned in live on BYU-TV as the Cougars improved to 25-8 and 1-0 in the Mountain West Conference while sending the Utes to 17-19, 0-1.

“I’m not sure if tonight’s game was entertaining from an offensive standpoint, but it was entertaining because it was a rivalry,” said BYU head coach Gordon Eakins.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth and the score knotted at 1-1, Kristin Delahoussaye and JC Clayton each drew walks, bringing up Quiocho. The Cougar third baseman sent a 1-0 pitch easily over the fence in left field, providing what proved to be the game-winning hit.

The four-bagger is the first for Quiocho in six games and is the senior’s 12th home run this season, second-most on the team.

“I don’t plan on hitting home runs,” Quiocho said. “I don’t try to hit home runs. I just try to produce for my team, so I was glad I could get a big hit for them.”

Utah applied some pressure to the Cougars in the seventh and final inning, putting runners on second and third with the tying run at the plate after a BYU error. But Ute Hannah Clements sent a grounder to Delahoussaye who threw Clements out at first to close out the game.

Delahoussaye starred on defense for BYU, including a diving stop in the seventh inning.

BYU’s first run came off a home run by rightfielder Caschjen Atagi’s leadoff at-bat in the second inning, smacking the ball like a ping pong ball off a paddle to give BYU a 1-0 lead.

Quiocho, Atagi, Clayton and Amanda Kellum had one hit apiece for the Cougars.

“We usually have more fireworks,” Eakins said. “I don’t think we put the ball in play hard enough—especially with our big hitters up—enough times.”

Paige Affleck pitched a complete game for BYU, earning five strikeouts while scattering three hits and giving up just one run.

BYU and Utah will play again at Miller Field at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

PROVO -- No. 25 BYU (23-8) looks forward to clear skies, and warmer weather as it gears up for a series of home games, including its home opener against Southern Utah Wednesday at 4 p.m.

This is the second attempt for a home opener as the first one, a doubleheader on March 31 against Utah State was snowed out.

The first game against Utah on Friday at 6 p.m. (MST) will be broadcast on BYUTV Live.

Live stats will be provided at all three games this week and can be found at www.byucougars.com.
