Delaney Takes Control

PROVO -- Sophomore Delany Willard brought in all four of BYU’s runs off a home run and a triple as BYU defeated San Diego State 4-0 on Saturday at Gail Miller Field.

The win gives BYU a 1-1 split with the Aztecs in the season series and puts the Cougars back on top of the Mountain West Conference standings with a 31-10, 6-2 record.

Willard hit a three-run homer to left centerfield in the fourth inning after Andrea Ramirez and Jessica Fitu both reached base. The home run was Willard’s seventh of the year, tied for third-most on the team.

“I just wanted to do anything I could to get the team going,” Willard said of the home run.

The sophomore rightfielder tacked on the game’s final run by knocking a triple into the deep rightfield corner late in the sixth inning. Fitu rounded the diamond from first base after reaching on an error to score her second run of the game.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” Eakin said of Willard. “She had two huge hits. That’s a big-time game, especially as a sophomore in our program.”

As a team the Cougars tallied seven hits and three earned runs against San Diego State pitcher Samantha Beasley, arguably the MWC’s best pitcher who came into the game with a 0.78 ERA with a 22-6 record.

“You face one of the best pitchers in America and it’s going to be tough, but over the last two days collectively we have hit better against her than anyone in the country,” Eakin said.

The Cougar pitching was stellar itself. Paige Affleck went all seven innings for the complete game shutout, scattering five hits with three strikeouts to improve to 22-8.

Willard finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run. Ramirez went 2-for-3 and Fitu added a 1-for-2 day with two runs. Kristin Delahoussaye and JC Clayton also had one hit apiece with Tiffany Messerschmidt getting a run.

BYU will continue its home stand with a doubleheader against Idaho State on Tuesday, April 27, with games starting at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
