Rebels Topple BYU in Eight

Image

LAS -- Angeline Quiocho broke the BYU single-season homerun record Friday, belting three round trippers in an extra inning 8-7 loss to UNLV.

Quiocho started the game with a conference-leading 22 homeruns, needing one to pass Jodi Norton, who hit 22 in 2007.

The record-breaking shot came in the top of the third with two runners on, giving BYU (39-11 overall, 10-3 MWC) a 3-1 lead, and Quiocho the record.

However, the Rebels (30-19 overall, 7-4 MWC) would not go away, in a back-and-forth conference battle that saw four lead changes. The Rebels took a 4-3 on a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth.

The lead was short-lived as Quiocho launched her second long ball in the fifth inning, with the Cougars trailing. Quiocho’s 23rd homerun of the season put her in first place for homeruns in a single season by a Cougar.

Quiocho recorded her sixth RBI of the night, and her third homerun of the game in the seventh inning. The blast tied the score at 7-7, and on the heels of a defensive stand in the bottom half of the frame, the Cougars sent the game into extra innings.

The Cougars had their chance in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded senior first baseman Andrea Ramirez grounded out to end the top of the inning.

The deciding play of the contest came after the Rebels loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning and a Cougar error allowed the winning run to cross the plate. The final game of the two-game series will be played tomorrow in Las Vegas at 2 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

BYU Travels to Play Second, Third in MWC

Image

PROVO -- Currently sitting atop the Mountain West Conference, BYU looks to pull away in the standings with a three-game road trip to San Diego State and UNLV this weekend.

The Cougars will face San Diego State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MDT in a match-up featuring the top two teams in the MWC. The Aztecs are currently one game back of BYU with a 29-12, 7-2 record. BYU is at 38-10, 9-2 after traveling to Southern Utah and taking two from the T'Birds on Tuesday.

The two teams split the series in Provo with BYU losing 9-4 before winning the second game 4-0.

BYU will then travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV at 7 p.m. MDT on Friday and then again at 3 p.m. MDT on Saturday. UNLV (28-19, 5-4) is third in the MWC standings, three games back of the Cougars. BYU hosted the Rebels just once in Provo, winning 7-3 on Caschjen Atagi's walk-off grand slam.

Senior Angeline Quiocho needs just two more home runs to break the BYU and MWC season record of 23 set three years ago by Jodi Norton. Quiocho is also two at-bats away from breaking the BYU career record for at-bats. The senior already holds the BYU career records for hits, runs, home runs and stolen bases.

Senior Andrea Ramirez is right behind Quiocho, landing in the top five in the BYU record books in career at-bats, career hits, career doubles and career RBI with more games to go in 2010.

Junior Paige Affleck is also close to breaking other BYU records, needing just one more win to pass Summer Tobias for most wins by a Cougar catcher in a season. Affleck is already the BYU career leader in strikeouts and is creeping up on the career wins chart.
