LAS -- Jessica Fitu highlighted a combined effort for BYU Saturday, going 3-for-5 with four RBI in a 14-8 victory over UNLV in Las Vegas.

Fitu put the Cougars on top in the third with a two-out single, scoring Andrea Ramirez to make the score 3-1. The RBI was Fitu’s 42nd of the season. Fitu would later tally her fifth RBI of the day, moving her into third place in the Mountain West Conference behind teammates Ramirez and Angeline Quiocho.

Picking up her 28th win of the season, Paige Affleck found a way to minimize the damage in the bottom of the fourth by retiring two Rebels with the bases loaded and, in the process, recorded her fifth strikeout of the game. She finished the game with eight.

Freshman shortstop J.C. Clayton was the spark plug in the fifth inning for the Cougars, starting a four-run inning with a lead-off walk. Clayton was 3-for-5 on the day with a triple and three runs. Following an RBI single by Fitu, Amanda Kellum put the Cougars on top for good, hitting a three-run bases-clearing double in the same frame to lengthen the lead to 7-2.

Reigning MWC player of the week Kristin Delahoussaye tacked on an insurance run for Cougars in the sixth, belting a solo home run, her fifth of the season. Quiocho followed suite in the seventh by belting her 26th home run of the season. With the shot, Quiocho recorded her sixth home run and 18th RBI of the week.

The Cougars return to action Monday at 3 p.m. against Utah State in Logan.

PROVO -- Currently sitting atop the Mountain West Conference, BYU looks to pull away in the standings with a three-game road trip to San Diego State and UNLV this weekend.

The Cougars will face San Diego State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MDT in a match-up featuring the top two teams in the MWC. The Aztecs are currently one game back of BYU with a 29-12, 7-2 record. BYU is at 38-10, 9-2 after traveling to Southern Utah and taking two from the T'Birds on Tuesday.

The two teams split the series in Provo with BYU losing 9-4 before winning the second game 4-0.

BYU will then travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV at 7 p.m. MDT on Friday and then again at 3 p.m. MDT on Saturday. UNLV (28-19, 5-4) is third in the MWC standings, three games back of the Cougars. BYU hosted the Rebels just once in Provo, winning 7-3 on Caschjen Atagi's walk-off grand slam.

Senior Angeline Quiocho needs just two more home runs to break the BYU and MWC season record of 23 set three years ago by Jodi Norton. Quiocho is also two at-bats away from breaking the BYU career record for at-bats. The senior already holds the BYU career records for hits, runs, home runs and stolen bases.

Senior Andrea Ramirez is right behind Quiocho, landing in the top five in the BYU record books in career at-bats, career hits, career doubles and career RBI with more games to go in 2010.

Junior Paige Affleck is also close to breaking other BYU records, needing just one more win to pass Summer Tobias for most wins by a Cougar catcher in a season. Affleck is already the BYU career leader in strikeouts and is creeping up on the career wins chart.
