TEMPE -- No. 16 BYU (1-3) dropped its second straight, extra-inning game, 5-3, to Portland State before rallying back from five runs down to defeat Ole Miss, 9-5, on Friday at the Kajikawa Classic.
BYU senior catcher Jessica Fitu hit two home runs, including a solo shot and a two-run homer in extra innings, but BYU gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for its third-straight loss to start the season.
Tied 1-1 through seven innings, Fitu sent her second home run over the left field fence, scoring two runs, including junior Jessica Dugas who was on base due to international tiebreaker rules.
Fitu also hit a solo shot in the second inning for her first home run of the season.
Senior Paige Affleck no-hit the Vikings through seven innings, picking up five strikeouts while giving up no earned runs. But late in the eighth, Affleck walked and then advanced the runner on a wild pitch. The Vikings then hit three straight singles to bring in Meghann Lyons, on base due to the tiebreaker rules. With the bases loaded, Lacey Holm was hit by a pitch to bring in the game-tying run. Karmen Holladay finished the game, hitting a 1-0 pitch to the outfield to earn the winning RBI.
Sophomore Alexandra Hudson had two hits and freshman Katie Manuma added a single for BYU.
Game 2
Losing their first three games and falling behind Ole Miss by a 5-0 margin in the third inning, the Cougars showed heart, scored nine runs over the next three innings to claim their first victory of the young season.
Four BYU freshman led the way in lighting the fire under the Cougars. Carly Duckworth came on in the third inning to silence the Ole Miss hitters while Manuma, Lacey Millett and Madisen Robb hit well at the plate, accounting for five of the Cougars' nine runs.
Manuma hit 2-for-3 with two runs while Robb went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Millett added one hit, one run and one RBI in her first career start.
Duckworth, who had previously only seen spot time as a pinch runner in two of BYU's earlier games, entered the circle as the third Cougar pitcher of the game late in the third inning. After helping get BYU out of the inning, Duckworth retired the side in the fourth, allowing the Cougars to get back in the game.
BYU cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third when Hudson scored off an RBI-single from Millett. Senior Kristin Delahoussaye followed the freshman, sending the freshman home on a deep double to right centerfield.
"Lacey put the ball in play and let her speed do the rest," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "She came up in clutch situations for us. I put Lacey in because I am looking for people who want to step up and play the game."
With Duckworth calming the Ole Miss bats in the fourth, the bottom of the order came alive. A walk by Manuma and back-to-back singles from Robb and Hudson loaded the bases. The Cougars slowly chipped away from there, with Manuma scoring on a fielder's choice off a Stacie Graham at bat, then scoring another when Hudson came home after an illegal pitch.
"Everyone battled hard," Eakin said. "We got a couple breaks and made a couple of our own breaks and from then on we had the momentum."
BYU rounded out the scoring when Graham reached home after a fielding error by the Rebel third baseman.
Affleck entered as the fourth pitcher of the game for BYU, holding the Rebels scoreless over the final three innings. The Cougars played four pitchers in a game for the first time in school history.
A lead-off double by Fitu and singles from Manuma, junior Delaney Willard, Robb and sophomore JC Clayton put three insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to round out the scoring. Clayton returned to the line-up for both games on Friday after taking a cleat in the shin from an Oregon player on Thursday that required four stitches.
BYU will finish up at the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday at 9 a.m. MT, facing No. 21 Texas A&M.

No. 16 BYU softball is traveling to Tempe, Ariz., to participate in the Kajikawa Classic on Feb. 10-12, facing No. 14 Oregon, Texas Tech, Portland State, Ole Miss and No. 21 Texas A&M.
COUGAR QUICK HITS
— BYU returns four Mountain West Conference first-teamers, including senior catcher Jessica Fitu, senior pitcher Paige Affleck, senior second baseman Kristin Delahoussaye and sophomore shortstop JC Clayton. Fitu, Affleck and Delahoussaye were also all-region honorees last season while Clayton was MWC Freshman of the Year.
— BYU is 8-3 all-time in its season openers and 36-14 all-time in season-opening tournaments. The Cougars have won six-straight season openers.
— The Cougars are a combined 10-9 all-time against Kajikawa Classic opponents Oregon (2-3), Texas Tech (0-1), Portland State (3-1), Ole Miss (1-1) and Texas A&M (4-3).
OPPONENTS SERIES NOTES
The Cougars defeated Oregon in their sixth game of the season last year, blanking the eventual NCAA Regional qualifiers, 5-0. BYU’s Paige Affleck pitched a three-hit complete game, striking out eight. The Cougars scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning, including a two-RBI single by Jessica Fitu. The win broke a three-game losing streak to the Ducks dating back to 2005.
BYU has faced Texas Tech just once in program history dating back to the second year of softball at BYU in 2001. The Red Raiders eked out a 5-4 win in eight innings. Head coach Gordon Eakin has never faced Texas Tech since taking over the head job in 2003.
BYU holds the edge over Portland State thanks in most part to two wins in 2005. The Cougars defeated the Vikings by a combined score of 23-0 in two wins that year, though they did drop a 3-1 loss the same season. Like this season, BYU faced Portland State in its third game of the season in 2005, also.
Mississippi and BYU have played each other twice, eight years apart, in 2001 and 2009. The last memory for the Cougars was a bad one, as the loss to Ole Miss was the second in a five-game losing streak, the last time BYU has lost four or more in a row.
BYU and Texas A&M have the most history among teams the Cougars will face at the Kajikawa Classic. In seven contests, BYU holds a 4-3 margin, including wins in the last two games. Traveling to College Station in 2010, BYU knocked off the No. 19 Aggies by scores of 5-3 and 5-4. The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the eighth in the first game, then came back down 4-0 in the second game to get the wins. Affleck pitched all eight innings, striking out seven and giving up just one earned run in game one while Hannah Howell won the second game of her career in game two.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Seniors Paige Affleck, Caschjen Atagi, Kristin Delahoussaye and Jessica Fitu, along with junior Krista Hicks, have been chosen by their teammates as team captains for the 2011 season.
WIN STREAKS
Under BYU head coach Gordon Eakin, the Cougars have compiled 23 win streaks of five games or more in the last eight seasons. In 2010, BYU matched a season-high with five such streaks, tying the 2005 Cougars. BYU set a program-high streak of 16 consecutive wins in both 2007 and 2009.
