Affleck Lights Up No. 16 Hawaii

Image

HONOLULU -- BYU senior pitcher Paige Affleck struck out 13 batters, a new career high, as the Cougars defeated No. 16 Hawaii 4-0 on Thursday at the Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament.

Affleck surpassed her previous career high of 12 strikeouts set against Wisconsin in 2009, befuddling the Rainbow Wahine for seven innings. All but one of the strikeouts came with a Hawaii batter going down swinging while Affleck gave up no runs, two walks and just three hits besides.

The BYU batters continued their recent trend of striking early, putting up two runs on the board in the first inning on senior Jessica Fitu's two-run homer, her second in as many days.

Hawaii challenged right back in the bottom of the first, but BYU centerfielder Jessica Dugas' strong throw to home as the Rainbow Wahine's Kelly Majam came around the turn reached in time for Fitu to tag Majam out at the plate.

Freshman Lacey Millett scored in the third, reaching on a passed ball after striking out, then stealing second and third base before sophomore JC Clayton's single completed her trip around the bases.

The Cougars would tack on one more run late in the sixth inning when junior Kristin Delahoussaye blooped a pitch to shallow right field. Delahoussaye was thrown out at first, but pinch runner Stacie Graham scored from third in the meantime to give BYU a 4-0 lead.

Affleck continued to keep the Hawaii batters at bay, striking out Melissa Gonzalez with the bases loaded in the sixth before sending all three Rainbow Wahine batters in the seventh down swinging to end the game.
