FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The BYU softball team scored a season-high 18 runs, extending its win streak to double-digits, with a 18-5 victory over Colorado State on Thursday.
The win is BYU's 10th in a row, giving the Cougars two double-digit win streaks for the first time in school history after the team won 12 straight earlier this season. The Cougars have now won 22 of their last 23 games to improve to 34-15 overall and 8-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
BYU swept the season series with Colorado State thanks to big days at the plate up and down the lineup. The Cougars totaled 13 hits, including two home runs, two triples and two doubles.
Left fielder Carly Duckworth scored four runs, becoming the 10th player in BYU history to score four or more runs in a single game. The freshman went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, adding two RBI and two walks.
Right fielder Delaney Willard had a team-high three hits, including a double, with three runs and two RBI and catcher Jessica Fitu hit her third home run in four games to finish with four RBI.
Up 1-0 in after one inning, BYU scored sixth in the second started by a double by Willard to lead off the inning. After Duckworth walked and Stacie Graham was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jessica Dugas drew a walk to send in the inning's first run.
Two batters later, junior Tiffany Messerschmidt singled up the middle for two RBI before Fitu added three more on a shot over the fence to give BYU a commanding 7-0 lead after two innings.
In the fifth and final inning, junior Krista Hicks began the inning with her first-career triple, setting her up to score along with pinch runner Lacey Millett when Willard singled to bring both runners home. After two more walks by the Cougars, Delahoussaye hit a two-run single of her own to finish the scoring.
Starting pitcher Paige Affleck pitched 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and one earned run, improving to 22-10.
BYU travels to face New Mexico on Friday, May 6, at 6 p.m. MT. The Cougars will also play the Lobos on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT, a game which will be televised live by The Mtn.
