POCATELLO, Idaho - Going down early, the BYU softball team couldn't get enough runs to make a comeback on a Idaho State, losing 7-4 on Monday at Miller Ranch Field.

The Cougars (24-12) fell behind 6-0 after five innings, losing to the Bengals (6-28) for the first time in program history after taking the first 10 games in the series.

Designated player Tiffany Messerschmidt went 3 for 4 and JC Clayton had two hits for BYU.

Two BYU fielding errors led to two of Idaho State's first three runs before the Bengals scored three more in the bottom of the fourth. BYU finally got on the board in the top of the following inning after an RBI single by Clayton followed by a triple down the right field line by Delaney Willard brought in two more, cutting the lead in half, 6-3.

In the sixth, Messerschmidt singled to bring a run in and Clayton got a hit to load the bases with two outs, but Willard, who has hit two grand slams this season, popped up to shortstop to end the threat.

BYU will play another non-conference game on Wednesday, Apr. 11, at 6 p.m. against Utah Valley at home. BYUtv will broadcast the game.
