St. George, Utah- The BYU softball team combined for 23 runs Saturday to beat Dixie State 12-2 and 11-3 in a double header in St. George.

“It was a good day,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “Every player was able to play and it gave us a chance to see where each player is as we closed out our fall season.”

Caroline Umphlett took the mound for the Cougars in game one and gave up only two runs in three innings of work. Hannah Howell came out to pitch in relief of Umphlett in the fourth inning and held Dixie State to zero runs to help the Cougars earn the five-inning 12-2 victory.

Offensively, the team produced at the plate with 12 hits for 12 runs. Megan Arnold highlighted the offensive effort for the Cougars with a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

BYU continued its offensive domination into the second game of the double header and combined for 11 runs on 12 hits for the 11-3 win.

Tori Almond earned the start and pitched through three and one-third innings giving up three runs, until Howell once again came in to close out the game and the fall season for the Cougars.

BYU will head back to St. George on Feb. 7 for the start of its regular season in the Red Desert Classic and will play Colorado State.
