STOCKTON, Calif. — With tough conditions, Patrick Fishburn posted a 15th place finish at the Pacific Invitational to lead BYU men’s golf to a 12th place tie after the first round, Thursday.

“We started off the day poorly, and we weren’t able to keep up,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “It was a tough day overall. We hit some shots that landed in difficult positions, making it hard to score well.”

The Cougars shot 27-over-par on the day. BYU birdied eight holes as a team for a total score of 311, tying with Temple and UT-Rio Grande Valley. Long Beach State leads all teams in first place at eight-over-par. Host and fellow West Coast Conference member Pacific is in a three-way tie for third place (+15) with Sacramento State and UC Irvine.

Fishburn shot three-over-par through today’s round of 18 holes, shooting just one-over-par on the front nine. He birdied two of the three par 5 holes on the par 71 tournament course.

Sophomores CJ Lee and Zach Pritchard both shot seven-over-par on the day, birdying two holes a piece. Together, they are tied for 49th place. Senior Tommy Higham shot 10-over-par on the day for a 74th place finish overall, and teammate Kaimakani Ruiz is tied for 80th place at 11-over-par.

The second round of play at the Pacific Invitational begins at 9:30 a.m MT.
