Big Innings Propel Cougars Over Utah State
LOGAN -- Big offensive innings and stellar pitching helped the BYU (24-19) softball team sweep the season series with Utah State (6-33) as they beat the Aggies in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, 8-0 and 4-1.
In game one, BYU went up 1-0 when Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly singled and then came around to score on an Aggie error. The Cougars held the slim 1-0 lead until they exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning. Becca Erickson got the scoring started with a solo home run to right center, her sixth of the season. With the bases loaded, Brooke Cadiente hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jill Roberts. Mindy Hanson then singled in Hodgen-Kelly to put BYU up 4-0. Senior Jackie Ellis hit a bases-clearing triple and later scored the seventh run of the inning to put the Cougars up 8-0. Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine (12-12) got the win, giving up only two hits while striking out three in five innings of work.
"I liked how we were hitting in the first game," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "One of our problems is that we seem to score everything in one inning, but I can live with that. I would, however, like the scoring to be more balanced throughout the game."
BYU didn't slow down in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Cadiente walked to bring Liz Smith home from third. An Aggie error allowed Cadiente and Oli Keohohou to score and put the Cougars up 3-0. Hodgen-Kelly scored BYU's fourth run of the game in the fourth inning when she reached on a fielder's choice and then came around to steal home. Utah State's only run came in the bottom of the fourth on a home run from Breanne Nickle. Freshman Ariel Capra (2-2) got the win, giving up one run on seven hits while striking out three.
BYU improves to 24-19 on the year. The Cougars resume conference play with doubleheaders against New Mexico Friday at 1:30 p.m. and against Colorado State Saturday at noon. All games are scheduled to be played at the newly-opened Gail Miller Field.
