Colorado State Ends Chance of Sweep
FORT COLLINS -- The BYU women's softball team (27-10, 5-3) split a doubleheader at Colorado State (25-10, 6-4) 3-1, 3-4 Saturday despite the 17th home run of the season from All-American Oli Keohohou.
Keohohou led off the day with a home run over the right centerfield fence as the Cougars took a quick 1-0 lead. She is now one homer shy of her last season's total of 18 and increases her career total to 56.
Colorado State tied the score a 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning as pitcher Melanie Mahoney doubled to score Genevieve Kelly.
The Cougars tacked on the final two runs in the fifth inning as junior Belinda Osborn and sophomore Arron Layns singled to start the inning. Sophomore Milli Jones drew a walk to load the bases. Junior Lindsey Gerhauser pinch ran for Layns and was brought home along with Jones on a two RBI single from shortstop Kate Walker.
Senior Cynthia Fallowfield (6-2) picked up the win in 6.1 innings on the mound striking out three and allow only four hits.
In game two, Keohohou led off the game with a double, her eighth on the year, and was brought home by sophomore Lauren Watson with her 21st RBI on the season for a quick 1-0 lead.
The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the third as Milli Jones walked and was advanced to third on a Kate Walker double, her eighth of the season also. Jones scored on a Watson single, her second RBI of the game. Senior Brooke Cadiente then scored Walker with a double to right center as the Cougars took a 3-0 lead.
The Rams responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as three quick doubles loaded the bases and prompted the coaches to replace Niki Andersen with Brooke Boyce on the mound. Genevieve Kelly hit a base-cleaing double to tie the score at 3-3. Allisa Thompson pinch ran for Kelly and was brought home on a sac fly RBI from Brittany Burtner as the Rams won 4-3.
MWC Pitcher of the Week Boyce (8-3) was credited with the loss while Andersen struck out seven batters in 5.1 innings on the mound. CSU's Megan Masser (12-4) got the win striking out nine in seven innings.
BYU will continue its conference road swing next weekend playing at San Diego State on Thursday in a doubleheader and at UNLV on Saturday. The Cougars return home for their final conference home games the weekend of April 25-26 when they host Colorado State and New Mexico on back-to-back days.
