Extra Innings Game Ends in Loss

SALT LAKE -- After nine innings of play, the BYU women's softball team (38-17, 11-5) suffered a disappointing loss to the University of Utah (27-22, 10-6) in Salt Lake City on Saturday afternoon.
Despite tallying 14 total hits, the Cougars' three runs were all scored off of solo homers. The Cougars left 14 runners on base during the nine innings, while surrendering only five hits to the Utes.
Sophomore Christie Zinanti started the game in the circle and had a perfect two innings before giving up a double in the third inning. In the fourth inning she gave up a solo home run and the Utes recorded an unearned run off of a throwing error.
Senior Dani Snow got the Cougars on the board in the sixth inning with a solo shot, and Freshman Kristin Delahoussaye tied the game with a leadoff homer in the seventh inning. It was both Coug's second bomb in as many days.
With the game tied two all, the Cougars headed into the extra innings looking for another close win. Freshman Caschjen Davis led off the top of the inning with another solo jack, but her run was matched in the bottom half of the inning by the Utes.
BYU was unable to capitalize on two baserunners in the ninth inning. Afielding error allowed a Ute runner to reach home, giving Utah the 4-3 win.
The game marks a split between the two Desert First Duel rivals, yet BYU was awarded the Softball trophy based on overall runs scored, with six more than Utah.
BYU leads the Duel 31 points to 28.5, the final winner will be decided on the baseball diamond when BYU travels to Utah on May 15-17.
The disappointing loss moves the Cougars out of first place in the Mountain West Conference standings. They now trail San Diego State.
The Cougars host Utah Valley on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before returning to the conference title battle.
