First Loss to No. 9 Ga. Tech in Extra Innings

LAS -- After cleanly beating the University of San Diego 11-3, BYU lost to No. 9 Georgia Tech 10-9 in extra innings in their first doubleheader in the Louisville Slugger Tournament.
"It was a terrific game to watch, and an even better game to play in even though we were on the losing end," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Georgia Tech is a great team, and probably the best hitting team we will face all season. They definitely deserve their top ten spot."
The scoring for both teams began in the fourth inning. Georgia Tech started putting points on the board but hitting three homers, one single run, and two two-runs, putting them ahead 5-0.
The Cougars (7-1) were quick to answer at their next at bat by racking up two runs of their own thanks to an Alexandra Hudson double, and a two-run shot by Delaney Willard.
In the bottom of the fifth, BYU took the lead with a four-run rally.
Tiffany Messerschmidt started the inning by getting walked, and then stole second. Angie Quiocho singled to left advancing Messerschmidt who was then brought home after Jessica Fitu singled to center field.
With three runners on, and no outs, Andrea Ramirez smacked a three-run bomb deep over the left-center field wall giving the Cougars their first lead of the game.
Georgia Tech answered with a two run shot in the top of the sixth, and three in the seventh giving them a 9-6 lead, but BYU did not give up hope.
In the bottom of the seventh, Amanda Kellum hit a three-run homer over the right-center field wall making the game all tied up.
"I love the way that our team competes. We never give up and we go out there for every game and play with confidence," Eakin said. "This team has a winners mentality and they compete with every team they face to the best of their abilities."
Georgia Tech managed to score one more point in the eighth inning, gaining the lead once more, ending the game as the Cougars were unable to answer.
BYU will take the field tomorrow to wrap up its tournament play in Las Vegas with a split doubleheader against University of Illinois Chicago and Cal State Fullerton. The games will be played at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.
