PROVO -- Two days and four games later, BYU (20-7) emerged undefeated at the Stanford Invitational after beating Santa Clara, 3-2 in extra innings, and Pacific, 3-1.
Angie Quiocho got the Cougars on the board first with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the second against Santa Clara. At their very next at-bat in the fourth, the Cougars scored one more.
Santa Clara scored one run in the third, and then tied the game at two a piece in the fifth.
The score remained tied during the regular seven innings, which sent the game into extra innings.
Although Santa Clara threatened with bases loaded, it was unable to score thanks to BYU’s superior defense.
BYU managed to end the game in the bottom of the eighth after Andrea Ramirez singled to left field which brought Quiocho home.
In their game against Pacific, the Cougars started off aggressive, scoring two runs right off the bat.
The scoring drive started when J.C. Clayton got a base hit, followed by Quiocho who walked. Ramirez smacked a one-run single to right-center field which brought Clayton home and advanced Quiocho to third.
During the very next Cougar batter, Quiocho stole home, thanks to a passed ball, giving BYU a 2-0 advantage.
Two innings later, Quiocho homered to left field giving BYU its third and last run of the game. Quiocho had two home runs on the day, each one hit over the left field wall.
BYU returns to Provo to play in its home opener in a doubleheader against Utah State on Wednesday.
