PROVO, Utah – Matt Carlino came off the bench for 11 points and nine assists to help the BYU men’s basketball team overcome a second-half deficit and win 68-63 against San Francisco on Saturday. The win puts BYU (17-9, 9-4 WCC) in sole possession of second place in the West Coast Conference standings with five games left to play.
"It's a great team win," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "All wins are really good, but when your guys play so hard, and everything came really difficult tonight – there was nothing easy. It had a whole different feel to the game than the last couple of games in the Marriott Center where we scored the ball well."
Carlino's 11 points all came in the second half and also added three steals in the win. Kyle Collinsworth finished the game with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Nate Austin crashed the boards with a career-high 16 to go along with four points and a block.
Eric Mika finished with a second straight double-double, 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, with Tyler Haws adding 19 points.
The Cougars got off to a 9-6 start with Mika scoring five of those points in four minutes. San Francisco (15-10, 8-5 WCC) grabbed a short-lived, one-point lead until Collinsworth answered with a layup, a dunk and a three-point play to give the Cougars a 16-12 lead with 11:40 left in the half.
Haws’ first field goal came at the 11:03 mark, which was followed by a Collinsworth 3-pointer to extend the lead to 21-14. The Dons tied the game at 27 a piece with 2:12 remaining, but the Cougars responded with an Austin block that led to a Haws bucket at the other end. With under a minute left, Haws completed a three-point play for a five-point lead and the Dons added a jumper to make it 32-29 at the break.
Collinsworth led all players at the half with 13 points, while Austin added 10 rebounds. Mika contributed eight points and eight rebounds with BYU outrebounding USF 29-13.
USF got off to a 4-0 start to take a 33-32 lead with Collinsworth answering with a fadeaway for a one-point lead. After the Dons extended their lead to 37-34, Carlino connected on two from beyond the arc to tie it at 43-43 with 13:40 remaining. After San Francisco jumped out to a five-point lead at 52-47, Carlino’s alley-oop on an inbounds play to Mika for the dunk and a Haws jumper cut BYU’s deficit to one at the 9:28 mark.
With under six minutes to play, Haws' trip to the charity stripe gave BYU a 57-55 lead, its first since the 17:50 mark of the second half. Austin drew a charge and had a putback dunk at the other end that was followed with a Haws floater for a six-point lead.
Carlino connected on his third 3-pointer after an offensive rebound and assist from Collinsworth to push the lead 65-60 with 2:37 remaining. Mika’s bucket made it a seven-point game with 2:02 to go but San Francisco hit a three to cut it back to four just 13 seconds later. A Carlino free-throw ended the scoring and the Cougars claimed the five-point win.
The Cougars grabbed 20 offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points and outrebounded the Dons 47-29.
BYU will hit the road to play Pacific on Thursday at 8 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

BYU defeated Santa Clara 89-76 on Thursday to extend its home winning streak to eight games. The Cougars host San Francisco on Saturday in what will be a battle for second place as the two teams are tied in the league standings at 8-4. Saturday's game will be televised live on BYUtv at 7 p.m. MST and broadcast live on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM and BYUcougars.com.

Kyle of all trades
In his first season since serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russia, Kyle Collinsworth is averaging 14.1 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is proving to be the most versatile player in the WCC, especially in league games. Through nine WCC games (as of 2/6/14), he ranks in the top 10 in the four of the five major statistical categories: tied for 9th in scoring, 4th in rebounding, 4th in assists and 1st in steals. He is also top 12 in four other categories: 8th in FG percentage, tied for 12th in defensive rebounds, 12th in assist/turnover ratio, 2nd in offensive rebounds and 7th in minutes played.

In 2002, NBA star Allen Iverson didn’t wanted to talk about practice. With BYU’s leading scorer Tyler Haws, we don’t want to talk about a full game, but just a half. In his career, Haws has scored 20 or more in a half nine times, including seven this season.
30 the old fashioned way
Tyler Haws scored 31 points against Loyola Marymount while hitting 9 of 19 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. He joined Brandon Davies (33 vs. Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012) as the only other player to score 30-plus points without hitting a three since Keena Young scored 34 vs. UNLV on March 10, 2007. The last BYU wing/guard to score 30 without hitting a three was Travis Hansen on Jan. 5, 2002 when he netted 30 against Pepperdine. Prior to Hansen, the last guard to score 30-plus was Marty Haws, Tyler’s father, on Jan. 4, 1990 vs. Hawaii.
The mythical 5x3 and the 4x3+2
A 5x3 is when a player records at least three in each of the major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). Only one BYU player – Rafael Araujo – has recorded a 5x3 since blocks and steals were first recorded beginning with the 1977-78 season. He did so with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals vs. Wyoming on Jan. 19, 2004. Kyle Collinsworth has joined 11 other BYU players who have fallen one stat shy of a 5x3 and recorded a 4x3+2 (at least three in four of the categories plus two in the other). He had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 5 steals at Pepperdine and 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals vs. LMU. Danny Ainge (2), Lee Cummard (6), Brandon Davies (3) and Greg Kite (2) are the only others to record more than one 4x3+2.
Fantastic freshman
Big man Eric Mika is having one of the top freshman campaigns in BYU history. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in several categories in the BYU record book, including: scoring (8th), rebounding (5th), field goal percentage (2nd), offensive rebounds (3rd), double-figure scoring games (T-6th) and consecutive games scoring in double figures (2nd).
