BYU vs. San Diego Notes and Quotes

BYU vs. San Diego Box Score

SAN DIEGO – Tyler Haws finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the BYU men’s basketball team to a 78-70 victory over San Diego on the road in its last conference game on Saturday. With the win, BYU clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament in Las Vegas.

"One of the real issues is, answering the call when they put a run on you," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "They got a two-point lead, but our guys really responded well. We kept it a two-point game for a while and then we made a couple huge plays. We can go through about 10 or 15 different plays and tell you those plays had to be made or we weren't going to win."

Haws added three assists and a block, while Matt Carlino went for 14 points, four rebounds and six assists off the bench. Anson Winder scored all of his 11 points in the first half with Kyle Collinsworth finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Nate Austin finished with a near double-double, nine points and 10 rebounds, and went a perfect 5 of 5 from the charity stripe.

The Cougars (21-10, 13-5 WCC) and Toreros (16-15, 7-11 WCC) traded baskets early with BYU trailing 12-11 less than five minutes into the game. BYU answered with a 14-1 run that was ignited by Collinsworth's baseline jumper. Haws and Carlino each connected on a 3-pointer and Carlino’s feed to Haws on the fastbreak ended the run for the 25-13 lead at the 11:53 mark.

With 10:23 to go before the break, Mika’s offensive rebound and putback kept BYU’s lead at 12. After a San Diego basket, the Cougars used an 8-2 run to extend their lead to a game-high 16 at 35-19 with 5:19 remaining. USD went on an 8-0 run to make it an eight-point game, but was ended by Winder and Carlino’s 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. The Toreros ended the half with six-straight points and BYU led 41-33 at the break.

Haws led all players with 13 points, while Winder added 11 points, going 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. BYU finished the half with a 65.4 shooting percentage and held USD to 33.3 percent.

A 7-2 start in the second half by the Toreros brought them within one possession, cutting BYU’s lead to 43-40. After USD made it a one-point game, Skyler Halford drained a 3-pointer to put BYU back up 47-43 at the 14:00 mark. San Diego took a three-point lead, but was answered by a Carlino 3-pointer and two free throws by Nate Austin as the Cougars retook the lead at 52-50.

Collinsworth’s steal and assist led to a dunk by Haws on the other end for a four-point lead with 10:15 remaining. After a 6-0 run by San Diego, Haws scored on a jumper to tie the score at 58-all and Mika’s perfect trip to the free-throw line gave BYU a two-point lead at 60-58 with 6:48 to go. Those four points were part of an 11-2 BYU run that also included an Austin three-point play and a Haws bucket from beyond the arc to extend the Cougars’ lead to 67-60 with under three minutes left.

USD’s Chris Anderson’s fifth 3-pointer, brought the Toreros within two points with 2:02 remaining but Collinsworth answered with a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock for the 70-65 lead. Austin and Carlino combined to hit 3 of 4 from the free-throw line and Haws scored on a layup to give the Cougars a double-digit lead at 75-65 with 0:36 remaining.

BYU shot 51.9 percent from the field while holding the Toreros to a 43.1 shooting percentage. The Cougars also outrebounded USD 34-29.

The Cougars enter the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas on March 6-11 on a four-game winning streak and as the second seed. BYU's quarterfinal game on Saturday will be televised live on BYUtv or ESPN2 and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

Rankings as of 2/22/14.
4.6 Matt Carlino’s career assist average, second all-time in BYU history.  As a freshman in 2011-12, he averaged 4.6 assists and in 2012-13, he averaged 4.8. Carlino is averaging 4.5 assists per game this season.
6 The number of times a player in the West Coast Conference has scored 35 points or more in a single game since BYU joined the league in 2011. Five of the six instances have been achieved by Tyler Haws: 42 vs. Virginia Tech on 12/29/12, 37 vs. Washington on 3/19/13, 35 vs. Pepperdine on 1/9/14, 48 at Portland on 1/23/14 and 38 vs. Pacific on 1/30/14. The only other player other than Haws to score 35-plus during the last three seasons is Stephen Holt of Saint Mary’s (2/22/14).

He hit 10 of 10 on Feb. 20, 2010 at Wyoming, 12 of 12 vs. Cal State Northridge on Nov. 24, 2012, 10 of 10 vs. Utah on Dec. 8, 2012, 10 of 10 at Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012, 14 of 14 at Loyola Marymount on March 2, 2013 and 11 of 11 vs. Wichita State on Nov. 26, 2013.
8 With a bid to the 2013 NIT, Dave Rose and the Cougars reached the postseason for a BYU record eighth-straight season. In his first year as head coach, Rose and the Cougars went to the 2006 NIT. That was followed by six-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and last season’s NIT bid. BYU has also won 20-plus games in each of Rose’s eight seasons.
9 Including 2013-14, the number of seasons Dave Rose has been BYU’s head coach and the number of consecutive seasons BYU has won at least 20 games, the longest streak in program history.
43 The number of consecutive games Tyler Haws has scored in double figures, a career-best streak and the 6th-best in BYU history.

112 BYU’s point total against Stanford, a 112-103 road win. The point total is the most by a BYU team under Dave Rose and the most since Feb. 25, 1993, when the Cougars scored 128 at home against Sacramento State. It also marked a BYU record for points scored against a Pac-12 team.
229 Dave Rose (2005 to present) is second all-time in BYU basketball history with 229 career victories, behind only the great Stan Watts, who coached the Cougars to 371 wins from 1949 to 1972 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986. Rose and Watts are the only BYU coaches to coach at least 300 career games.
1,830 The number of points Tyler Haws has scored in his career, good for 7th all-time and 11 from tying Fred Roberts for 6th. Haws holds the BYU record for most points scored during freshman and sophomore seasons combined.

Kyle of all trades

In his first season since serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russia, Kyle Collinsworth is averaging 13.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is proving to be one of the most versatile players in the WCC, especially in league games. As of 2/22/14, he ranks in the top 12 in the four of the five major statistical categories: 12th in scoring, 5th in rebounding, 4th in assists and 1st in steals. He is also top 10 in five other categories: 6th in FG percentage, 9th in assist/turnover ratio, 3rd in offensive rebounds, 9th in defensive rebounds and 10th in minutes played.

We talkin’ about a half, not a (full) game, not a (full) game, not a (full) game. We talkin’ about a half!

In 2002, NBA star Allen Iverson didn’t want to talk about practice. With BYU’s leading scorer Tyler Haws, we don’t want to talk about a full game, but just a half. In his career, Haws has scored 20 or more in a half nine times, including seven this season.

30 the old fashioned way

Tyler Haws scored 31 points against Loyola Marymount while hitting 9 of 19 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. He joined Brandon Davies (33 vs. Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012) as the only other player to score 30-plus points without hitting a three since Keena Young scored 34 vs. UNLV on March 10, 2007. The last BYU wing/guard to score 30 without hitting a three was Travis Hansen on Jan. 5, 2002 when he netted 30 against Pepperdine. Prior to Hansen, the last guard to score 30-plus was Marty Haws, Tyler’s father, on Jan. 4, 1990 vs. Hawaii.

The mythical 5x3 and the 4x3+2

A 5x3 is when a player records at least three in each of the major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). Only one BYU player – Rafael Araujo – has recorded a 5x3 since blocks and steals were first recorded beginning with the 1977-78 season. He did so with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals vs. Wyoming on Jan. 19, 2004. Kyle Collinsworth has joined 11 other BYU players who have fallen one stat shy of a 5x3 and recorded a 4x3+2 (at least three in four of the categories plus two in the other). He had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 5 steals at Pepperdine and 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals vs. LMU. Danny Ainge (2), Lee Cummard (6), Brandon Davies (3) and Greg Kite (2) are the only others to record more than one 4x3+2.

Fantastic freshman

Big man Eric Mika is having one of the top freshman campaigns in BYU history. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in several categories in the BYU record book, including: scoring (8th), rebounding (6th), field goal percentage (2nd), offensive rebounds (2nd), double-figure scoring games (5th) and consecutive games scoring in double figures (2nd).
