BYU vs. Santa Clara Notes and Quotes
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Matt Carlino’s performance off the bench led the BYU men’s basketball team to a 91-81 win over Santa Clara at the Leavey Center for its fifth-straight win on Saturday.
"It's a great weekend for the guys and they deserved it," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "They played really well. We did so many things in this game that was a little bit different than what we normally have to do."
Carlino finished with a near double-double, 15 points and nine assists, with Kyle Collinsworth adding a team-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Anson Winder also added 16 points, all in the first half, off the bench.
Despite playing only one minute in the first half with foul trouble, Tyler Haws finished with 16 points and three assists that all came in the second half. Skyler Halford and Eric Mika each scored 10 points.
The Cougars got off to a slow start with their first field goal coming from a Halford 3-pointer three minutes into the game. A Collinsworth feed to Mika led to a two-hand dunk for a 7-4 BYU lead, which was followed by another Halford 3-pointer to cap a 9-2 run with 15:28 left in the first half. With Haws in early foul trouble, Winder scored the next 10 points for BYU as he connected on two from beyond the arc and an easy layup from a Carlino outlet pass to push BYU's lead to 20-12.
Carlino got hot after completing a three-point play that was followed by two 3-pointers and a block to cap a 13-2 run with 4:27 remaining in the half. Mika’s jump hook was followed by Collinsworth’s jumper that gave BYU a 24-point lead at 45-21. The Cougars ended the half up 47-30.
BYU had a 58.6 shooting percentage in the first half while holding SCU to 32.3 percent. Winder led all scorers with 16 points with Carlino adding nine points and four assists off the bench.
Haws scored the first points of the second half after a nice fake on the baseline and Halford hit a baseline jumper to extend the lead to 51-30. Despite the big deficit, the Broncos continued to fight and went on a 12-0 run to cut BYU’s lead to 10 at 58-48. The Cougars responded to the Bronco threat quickly with a 9-0 run to go back up 67-48 with 8:23 remaining.
With 6:17 remaining, Josh Sharp recorded a block, which led to a three-point play by Collinsworth. Carlino’s ninth assist went to Haws for the baseline dunk to make it a 20-point game at 80-60. SCU cut the BYU lead to 10 again late in the game but never closed the gap to single digits.
BYU finished the game with a 61.5 shooting percentage from the field, hit 7 of 11 from beyond the arc and outrebounded SCU 36-27. BYU’s bench also outscored SCU’s 35-18 and six Cougars scored in double figures.
The Cougars stay on the road to play Portland on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7/1160 AM.

Road trip continues with BYU at Santa Clara on Saturday

With an 83-76 win at San Francisco on Thursday, BYU earned its first road win in West Coast Conference play and first win away from the Marriott Center since Nov. 30. The Cougars will look to make it two-straight road wins when BYU plays at Santa Clara on Saturday in the Leavey Center at 7 p.m. PST. Saturday's game will be televised live on TWC SportsNet and ROOT NW/RM Sports and broadcast live on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM and BYUcougars.com.

Kyle of all trades
In his first season since serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russia, Kyle Collinsworth is averaging 13.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He is proving to be the most versatile player in the WCC, especially in league games. Through five WCC games, he ranks in the top 11 in the major statistical categories: 5th in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, 2nd in assists, 1st in steals and T-11th in blocks. He is also top 12 in four other categories: 1st in FG percentage, 1st in offensive rebounds, 6th in assist/turnover ratio and T-12th in defensive rebounds.
30 the old fashioned way
Tyler Haws scored 31 points against Loyola Marymount while hitting 9 of 19 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. He joined Brandon Davies (33 vs. Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012) as the only other player to score 30-plus points without hitting a three since Keena Young scored 34 vs. UNLV on March 10, 2007. The last BYU wing/guard to score 30 without hitting a three was Travis Hansen on Jan. 5, 2002 when he netted 30 against Pepperdine. Prior to Hansen, the last guard to score 30-plus was Marty Haws, Tyler’s father, on Jan. 4, 1990 vs. Hawaii.
The mythical 5x3 and the 4x3+2
A 5x3 is when a player records at least three in each of the major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). Only one BYU player – Rafael Araujo – has recorded a 5x3 since blocks and steals were first recorded beginning with the 1977-78 season. He did so with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals vs. Wyoming on Jan. 19, 2004. Kyle Collinsworth has joined 11 other BYU players who have fallen one stat shy of a 5x3 and recorded a 4x3+2 (at least three in four of the categories plus two in the other). He had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 5 steals at Pepperdine and 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals vs. LMU. Danny Ainge (2), Lee Cummard (6), Brandon Davies (3) and Greg Kite (2) are the only others to record more than one 4x3+2.
Fantastic freshman
Big man Eric Mika is having one of the top freshman campaigns in BYU history. He is currently ranked in the top six in several categories in the BYU record book, including: scoring (5th), rebounding (7th), field goal percentage (2nd), offensive rebounds (6th), double-figure scoring games (T-9th) and consecutive games scoring in double figures (2nd).
Setting the scoring standard
Tyler Haws’ 35-point game against Pepperdine is the most points scored by a West Coast Conference player since Haws scored 42 and 37 last season. Those three games are the only times a WCC player has scored 35 or more in the past three seasons. The last time a WCC player scored 35 or more came on March 25, 2011 as Santa Clara’s Kevin Foster scored 35 against Southern Methodist.
