OMAHA -- Brandon Davies and Kyle Collinsworth had career nights as the No. 21/25 BYU men’s basketball team improved to a perfect 7-0 with a 77-65 win over Creighton (4-3) in Omaha, Neb.
Davies, a sophomore forward, grabbed six rebounds to add to his career-high 24 points. Collinsworth, a true freshman, posted his first-career double-double, tying his career high with 12 points, and setting a new career mark with 10 rebounds.
“It was a great team win," said BYU head coach Dave Rose. "You take a look at the numbers and it’s amazing how we shared the ball."
In the complete team effort, six Cougars finished with at least four rebounds and two assists and four scored in double figures.
Scoring was staggered to start the contest, with Collinsworth scoring four quick points to help put the Cougars up 11-6 with 15:49 remaining in the first half.
Davies started strong, going 2-for-4 from the field to tally five points as BYU took a 17-12 lead into the second media timeout. The Cougars gained their largest lead of the half with 9:36 remaining after a Jackson Emery trey put the Cougars up 24-12 and extended the lead to 12 again after a Collinsworth dribble drive made it 30-18.
After not starting due to a shin injury, Emery went on to play the entire second half, recording 13 points and seven rebounds.
However, the Blue Jays went on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 34-28 going into halftime. Collinsworth led the Cougars in the first half, posting eight points, four rebounds and two assists.
The Jays didn’t go away as the second half began, pushing the Cougars to a 37-34 tally before Emery converted a steal with a layup to put the Cougars up by seven with 17:20 remaining in the game.
Freshman forward Doug McDermott led a Creighton charge to begin the second half, scoring five points on 2-of-3 shooting, pulling the Blue Jays to tie the contest at 48 with 11:38 remaining in the game.
Senior guard Jimmer Fredette sparked a 10-0 run to give the Cougars a 61-51 lead after an Emery pass set up a Hartsock dunk with 8:52 to play. Davies scored four points during the run and took over in the final minutes, propelling the Cougars to a 75-63 lead with 2:30 left in the game.
Fredette finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists in his lowest scoring output of the season. The senior guard has scored in double figures in all seven games this season.
BYU plays Hawaii on Saturday at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. MDT.

BYU at Creighton in First Road Game of 2010-11
After winning the South Padre Island Invitational with victories over South Florida and Saint Mary’s, No. 21/25 BYU will head to Omaha, Neb., to take on Creighton in the Mountain West Missouri Valley Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. The Cougars are 6-0 on the season after defeating South Florida and Saint Mary’s to claim the South Padre Island title. Creighton is now 4-2 following a 65-52 loss at Northwestern on Sunday. Jimmer Fredette leads the Cougars with 24.8 points, 4.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game while Jackson Emery contributes 12.8 points, 3.5 boards and 3.2 steals per game. Creighton is led by Antoine Young and Doug McDermott, who average 14.3 points apiece. Creighton is coached by Greg McDermott. Wednesday’s game can be heard live on KSL Newsradio beginning with the pregame show at 6 p.m. CT on 102.7 FM and 1160 AM out of Salt Lake City or via the Internet at KSL.com. Creighton’s Last Outing — Northwestern Tops Men’s Basketball, 65-52
EVANSTON, Ill. - Not even the presence of two-time All-American Kyle Korver could help Creighton in its first true road game of the 2010-11 season, as host Northwestern defeated the Bluejays, 65-52, on Sunday night. Korver, an eight-year NBA veteran who now plays for the Chicago Bulls, was in the crowd to watch his alma mater as well as his younger brother, senior Creighton guard Kaleb Korver.
Northwestern is off to its first 4-0 start since 1993-94, while Creighton dropped to 4-2 with the setback. Northwestern led for most of the first half, with Creighton’s largest lead coming 15-12 on a score inside by Kenny Lawson Jr. Lawson had nine points and five rebounds early on before Northwestern’s trapping zone gave the Jays some temporary fits.
A 10-0 NU run during a six-minute Bluejay drought gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the half at 36-24. Creighton would use a trey by Jahenns Manigat and hook shot from fellow freshman Doug McDermott closed the half with the Jays down just 40-32.
Lawson had 11 points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes, but was limited to just 12 minutes by foul trouble. Three others had six points, including McDermott, Manigat and Antoine Young, who also dished four assists in the opening half. NU’s John Shurna had 10 points in the opening seven minutes and led all players with 14 points before he, too, was sidelined with two fouls, while Michael Thompson had 10 points.
Both teams struggled to score in the first nine minutes of the second half, with nearly as many combined fouls (13) as there were points (14). NU’s Thompson snapped that spell when he stepped back to hit a three-pointer from the right corner to make it 50-39 in favor of the hosts. He duplicated his efforts 90 seconds later, putting the Wildcats ahead 53-39 with 9:17 to play and prompting a Bluejay timeout.
Creighton had a chance to trim NU’s deficit to 58-50 in the final six minutes, but an Ethan Wragge three-pointer was off the mark and NU’s Shurna hit a pair of pair of charity shots after being fouled on the rebound. A short time later, Manigat’s three-point attempt that could have made it a six-point game with 3:40 left was off the mark.
Shurna, a preseason National Player of the Year candidate, led Northwestern with 23 points, while Thompson added 18 points. NU made 49 percent of its 49 field goal attempts and 35 percent of its 20 three-point tries.
Creighton had three men in double-figures. Young had 18 points, McDermott added 14 and Lawson finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Creighton shot 37.3 percent from the field but struggled from long-range, hitting just 4-of-21 from downtown (19.0 percent).
Series Notes
Wednesday’s game will be the ninth meeting between BYU and Creighton. The Cougars hold a 5-3 advantage overall, including a 2-0 record at home, 2-3 at Creighton and 1-0 at neutral sites. The teams last played in 2002 at Creighton with the Bluejays winning 74-64. BYU won 61-52 the year before in Provo.
