Carlino and Winder come off the bench to lead BYU to fifth-straight win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Matt Carlino’s performance off the bench led the BYU men’s basketball team to a 91-81 win over Santa Clara at the Leavey Center for its fifth-straight win on Saturday.

"It's a great weekend for the guys and they deserved it," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "They played really well. We did so many things in this game that was a little bit different than what we normally have to do." 

Carlino finished with a near double-double, 15 points and nine assists, with Kyle Collinsworth adding a team-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Anson Winder also added 16 points, all in the first half, off the bench.

Despite playing only one minute in the first half with foul trouble, Tyler Haws finished with 16 points and three assists that all came in the second half. Skyler Halford and Eric Mika each scored 10 points.

The Cougars got off to a slow start with their first field goal coming from a Halford 3-pointer three minutes into the game. A Collinsworth feed to Mika led to a two-hand dunk for a 7-4 BYU lead, which was followed by another Halford 3-pointer to cap a 9-2 run with 15:28 left in the first half. With Haws in early foul trouble, Winder scored the next 10 points for BYU as he connected on two from beyond the arc and an easy layup from a Carlino outlet pass to push BYU's lead to 20-12.

Carlino got hot after completing a three-point play that was followed by two 3-pointers and a block to cap a 13-2 run with 4:27 remaining in the half. Mika’s jump hook was followed by Collinsworth’s jumper that gave BYU a 24-point lead at 45-21. The Cougars ended the half up 47-30.

BYU had a 58.6 shooting percentage in the first half while holding SCU to 32.3 percent. Winder led all scorers with 16 points with Carlino adding nine points and four assists off the bench.

Haws scored the first points of the second half after a nice fake on the baseline and Halford hit a baseline jumper to extend the lead to 51-30. Despite the big deficit, the Broncos continued to fight and went on a 12-0 run to cut BYU’s lead to 10 at 58-48. The Cougars responded to the Bronco threat quickly with a 9-0 run to go back up 67-48 with 8:23 remaining.

With 6:17 remaining, Josh Sharp recorded a block, which led to a three-point play by Collinsworth. Carlino’s ninth assist went to Haws for the baseline dunk to make it a 20-point game at 80-60. SCU cut the BYU lead to 10 again late in the game but never closed the gap to single digits.

BYU finished the game with a 61.5 shooting percentage from the field, hit 7 of 11 from beyond the arc and outrebounded SCU 36-27. BYU’s bench also outscored SCU’s 35-18 and six Cougars scored in double figures.
