Rose names Austin, Collinsworth and Fischer team captains
PROVO, Utah – Seniors Nate Austin, Kyle Collinsworth and Chase Fischer have been named team captains for the 2015-16 season, BYU coach Dave Rose announced Tuesday.
Austin, a 6-foot-11 forward, is back for a fifth year after receiving a medical redshirt. The Alpine, Utah, native suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in 2014-15 after starting the first 10 games of the season. In 116 career games, Austin has made 53 starts and posted averages of 3.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. He ranks fourth all-time at BYU with 235 offensive rebounds and 16th with 71 blocks.
Collinsworth is coming off a record-setting 2014-15 season in which he averaged 13.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.8 steals. The 6-foot-6 guard posted six triple-doubles to set the NCAA single-season record and tie the career record. The Bob Cousy Award candidate was the only player in the country ranked in the top 100 in rebounds (42nd), assists (16th) and steals (71st). In addition to the statistical accolades, Collinsworth earned first-team All-West Coast Conference and honorable mention AP All-America honors.
Fischer started 33 of 34 games played in 2014-15 and averaged 13.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He led the West Coast Conference and was 10th in the nation with 103 3-pointers, the second most in a single season in BYU history. He also set the BYU single game record with 10 3s against Chaminade at the Maui Invitational. Fischer was also a captain in 2014-15.
The Cougars open the season Friday at home against Utah Valley at 7 p.m. MST. The game will be broadcast on BYUtv as well as the Cougar IMG Sports Network, KSL NewsRadio 102.7 FM/1160 AM and BYU Radio – Sirius XM 143.
