Emery earns WCC Player of the Week honors
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU freshman guard Nick Emery its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for February 15, 2016.
Emery led BYU to a pair of road wins at San Francisco (114-89) and Santa Clara (96-62), averaging 34.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 69.4 percent from the field, 65.0 percent from 3 and 100.0 percent from the free throw line.
Against San Francisco, Emery scored a BYU freshman record 37 points and tied the team record with 10 3-pointers. He got the Cougars out to a 58-39 lead at the half with 20 points in the first half. He hit 5 of 6 from 3 in the first half and did the same in the second. Emery finished the game shooting 12 of 15 from the field and 10 of 12 from 3-point range. His 37 points are the second most scored by an individual in WCC play this season.
At Santa Clara, Emery scored 31 points to become the only Cougar freshman to score 30-plus points in back-to-back games. Emery led BYU to a 51-32 lead at the half with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting.
For the weekend, Emery connected on 25 field goals, 13 from long distance. His 10 triples against the Dons were the second most in WCC history behind LMU legend Jeff Fryer, who connected on 11 in an NCAA tournament win against Michigan (3/18/90).
Emery is the third Cougar to be named WCC Player of the Week as Kyle Collinsworth (Nov. 30 and Jan. 11) and Kyle Davis (Nov. 16) have also earned honors this season.
