Collinsworth to play in 2016 Portsmouth Invitational
PROVO, Utah – Kyle Collinsworth, the NCAA’s triple-double king, will head to Virginia this week to compete in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament Wednesday through Saturday.
In its 64th year, the PIT invites 64 of the best college basketball seniors to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament in front of representatives from NBA teams and numerous international leagues. Notable MVPs include former BYU forward Brandon Davies (2013), Jimmy Butler of the Chicago Bulls (2011) and DeMarre Carroll of the Toronto Raptors (2009).
Collinsworth, a four-year starter and three-year team captain at BYU, concluded his career with 1,707 points, 1,047 rebounds, 703 assists and 229 steals. He is the program’s all-time leader in career rebounds and assists, is second all-time in steals and 11th in points. In 2015-16 Collinsworth set the single-season record for assists and assists per game.
As a junior in 2014-15, Collinsworth totaled six triple-doubles to break the NCAA’s single-season record and tie the career record. With six more in 2015-16, Collinsworth tied his own season record and doubled the previous career record held by Shaquille O’Neal (LSU) and Michael Anderson (Drexel).
This season, Collinsworth averaged 15.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.0 steals and was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year and received Associated Press All-America honorable mention.
Brandon Davies competed in the PIT in 2013 and led his team to the tournament title and was named MVP. He averaged 20.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 block and 1.3 steals while shooting 67.6 percent from the field.
