Childs earns second WCC Player of the Week honor
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU junior forward Yoeli Childs its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 14, 2019.
Childs led BYU to wins over Portland (79-56) and Santa Clara (80-74) while averaging 27.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals. For the week, he shot 60.0 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from 3-point range and 82.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Against the Pilots, Childs totaled 28 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and one block. He hit 9 of 13 from the field, 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. After an eight-point first half, Childs totaled 20 points in the second, tying his career high for points in a half. He helped the Cougars outscore Portland 43-26 in the second.
In the Santa Clara win, Childs hit 9 of 17 from the field, tied his career high with three 3-pointers and made 6 of 8 from the free-throw line for 27 points. He also added six rebounds and two steals. He had a 16-point first half, helping the Cougars to a 40-33 lead at the break. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Childs scored six-straight Cougar points to help BYU maintain a two-possession lead. He finished the second half with 11 points.
It is the second WCC weekly honor for Childs this season and third of his career.
