BYU Plays at Wyoming Monday

Coming off its first conference loss at Colorado State Saturday, BYU travels to Laramie to play its second Mountain West road game of the season at Wyoming Monday at 7 p.m. The Cougars (13-5) and Cowboys (11-4) enter the game at Wyoming's Arena-Auditorium with identical 2-1 conference records. The game is being televised by SportsWest Productions on KSL, channel 5, in Salt Lake City. The game can be heard on KSL Newsradio 1160 with Greg Wrubell and Mark Durrant calling the action on the Cougar Sports Network.

Scouting Wyoming

Wyoming (11-4, 2-1 MWC) returns five lettermen and three starters from last year's 19-12 team that tied for fourth in the Mountain West Conference with an 8-6 record. The Cowboys also return forward/center Ugo Udezue, who missed last season with an injury but started and scored 20.5 points with 7.4 rebounds during the 1998-99 season. The Cowboys are coming off consecutive one-point overtime wins at Colorado State (70-69) and vs. Utah (78-77). The Cowboys are 6-0 at home this year, 3-4 in away games and 2-0 on a neutral court. Wyoming hasan 11-game home winning streak going dating back to last year. Their last loss at home was more than one year ago vs. Colorado State (77-71) on Jan. 15, 2000. This year's home wins include UC Riverside (77-59), Denver (70-55), Creighton (78-74), Delaware State (92-64), Wichita State (72-65) and Utah (78-77 in OT). Wyoming also defeated Oregon State (65-53) in a neutral court game played in Casper, Wyo. The Cowboys average 74.4 points while giving up 68.0.

Series History

This will be the 150th meeting between the two schools. BYU leads the series 84-65. Wyoming won the last meeting, an 85-70 victory in Laramie on Feb. 26, 2000. After playing to a 43-43 tie at half, BYU hit the wall as Wyoming out scored the Cougars 42-27 in the second half. BYU won the game in Provo, 87-78. The teams did not play in 1998-99 after splitting the season series in 1997-98. The Cougars have won six of the last 10 meetings dating to the 1994-95 season but Wyoming has won four of the last six dating to the 1996-97 campaign. Wyoming has won three straight over BYU in Laramie. BYU's last win in Laramie was an 81-71 triumph on Feb. 10, 1996 when Cougar senior Nathan Cooper was a pre-missionary freshman. BYU Falls 60-55 at CSU Saturday

FORT COLLINS -- A cold shooting night from three-point range helped doom BYU Saturday as they fell to the Colorado State Rams 60-55 at Moby Arena in Fort Collins. BYU shot a season-low 6.3 percent on three-point attempts, going 1-16 from behind the arc. After missing their first 13 treys, Trent Whiting finally connected for the Cougars at the 4:50 mark of the second half to pull BYU even at 47-47. BYU, who had trailed the entire game, would never get over the hump in the final minutes, as the Rams were able to make the key shots to maintain their advantage. Following Whiting's trey, CSU's John Sivesind turned the momentum back to the Rams with his own three-pointer and then cut backdoor on the next possession after a Nate Knight miss to put the Rams up by five at 52-47. Mekeli Wesley, out with four fouls, was put back in the game and quickly brought BYU to within one with back-to-back buckets. The Cougars would get within one point two more times during the final moments, including a 56-55 deficit with only 34 seconds remaining. After two Sivesind free throws put the Rams up three with 11 seconds, Wesley was unable to connect on a heavily contested shot from behind the arc and CSU's Ron Grady added two more charity tosses to give the Rams the final 60-55 margin. BYU had four players reach double figures led by Whiting with 13 points. Wesley added 12, followed by Terrell Lyday with 11 and Travis Hansen with 10. Whiting added a career-high seven rebounds to share team-high honors with Wesley. BYU totaled only five assists on the night with no Cougar dishing out more than one pass that directly contributed to a basket. BYU trailed 35-29 at the half as CSU controlled the boards with 24 rebounds to BYU's 11. The Cougars changed their rebounding woes in the second half with 22 boards to CSU's 17 but the Rams were able to make the critical plays down the stretch. BYU finished the night shooting 37.7 percent from the floor and held CSU to nearly nine percentage points below its season average at 41.7 percent. CSU made 5-15 threes. The Rams had trouble pulling away from BYU in part because of a 55.6 percent shooting night at the line. Sivesind led CSU with 18 points while Grady added 13 and David Fisher 10. Brian Greene pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Whiting Coming Off Big Week

Trent Whiting led BYU in scoring and steals in both games last week and was tied for rebounding honors against CSU. He averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.0 assists for the week while shooting 50 percent from the floor. He scored a career-high 26 points while leading BYU to a 91-63 win over UNLV on ESPN Big Monday. He went 10-15 (.667) from the floor, including 3-6 on threes, and was 3-4 from the line while dishing out three assists with one block and adding a team-high and career-best three steals. Whiting scored a team-high 13 points while pulling down a career-high seven rebounds in BYU's 60-55 loss at Colorado State Saturday. He added a game-high three steals for the second straight game. Whiting leads the Cougars in scoring overall, averaging 16.0 points in the 11 games he has played since becoming eligible on Dec. 16, 2000.

Other Notables from Last Week

• BYU shot 47.2 percent from the floor last week. The Cougars shot a sizzling 56.4 percent at home vs. UNLV but made only 37.7 percent Saturday at Colorado State.

• BYU suffered its worst three-point shooting night of the year Saturday vs. the Rams, going 1-16 for a 6.3 percent success rate. It was the first time since BYU went 1-13 at New Mexico last year that the Cougars have made only one trey in a game.

• BYU is shooting 43.5 percent on threes in its 13 victories this season but only 19.8 percent from behind the arc in its five losses.

• Terrell Lyday is 11-20 from three-point range in the last four games. He was 8 of his last 9 until going 0-5 at CSU Saturday. He was 3-3 vs. UNLV Monday.

Colorado State became the first BYU opponent to score less than 70 points and still win. BYU is 12-1 when holding opponents to less than 70 points. BYU is 1-4 when opponents have scored 70 or more points.

BYU is Nation's Top Free Throw Shooting Team

BYU is ranked first in the nation in free throw percentage in the latest NCAA statistics released Tuesday. The Cougars are shooting 77.3 (354-458) percent as a team. Eight players are shooting 70 percent or better, with six shooting better than 80 percent (Wesley, Lyday, Whiting, Bobik), including one better than 90 percent (Knight) and Dan Howard at a perfect 2-2.

Trey Lyday

In the last four games Lyday is 11-20 from three-point range. He had made 8 of his last nine treys before going 0-5 on threes at CSU. He was named the MWC Player of the Week on Jan. 15 after he scored a game-high 24 points while making 5-6 three-pointers in BYU's win over San Diego State. Lyday's 0-5 night on threes Saturday was only the second game this year in which he has not made a trey. On the year he is shooting 39.1 percent on threes, making a team-leading 36 triples.

Cougars Equal Long Range Mark

The Cougars made 13 three-point field goals vs. SDSU to equal a BYU record set against LSU in 1992 and TCU in 1999. The Cougars attempted 26 three point field goals, a season high.

Offense, Offense, Offense

BYU shot 37.7 percent from the floor Saturday after having shot 50 percent or better from the floor in the previous two games. BYU has topped 50 percent five times this year, all wins. Four of the five games over 50 percent were in the Marriott Center. The one road game BYU shot over 50 percent was vs. Boise State (53.3 percent) during the Yahoo! Sports Invitational in Hawaii. Before scoring 29 at CSU, BYU had scored 40 or more points in the first half of the previous four games while holding their opponents to less than 30 points. BYU had outscored the opponents at half by and average of 44.5 - 23.5 in those games but trailed at CSU 35-29.

Defense, Defense, Defense

BYU was ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring defense (61.8 points allowed) in the latest ratings. BYU has also had success shutting down the opponent's top player. BYU held UNLV center Kaspars Kambala, averaging 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds entering the game, to two points and three rebounds. Against SDSU, Aztec star forward Randy Holcomb was the only player to reach double figures, but BYU held the two-time MWC Player of the Week winner to 13 points, almost five points below his team-leading season scoring average. BYU had held its last five opponents under 40 percent shooting until CSU shot 41.7 percent -- but still nearly nine percentage points below its season average.

On the Boards

BYU has out rebounded its opponents in five of the last six games. CSU out rebounded BYU, 41-33. BYU had 37 rebounds vs. UNLV and grabbed 40 or more rebounds in the four prior games. BYU has totaled 40 or more boards six times this year. The Cougars are averaging 34.4 rebounds per game while out boarding their opponents by 1.1 rebounds per game. Mekeli Wesley pulls down a team-best 5.4 boards per game, 10th best in the MWC entering the week.

Whiting Adds Third Threat to Cougar Attack

In addition to last year's one-two scoring punch of Mekeli Wesley and Terrell Lyday, BYU has another potent scorer in transfer Trent Whiting. He scored a team-leading 13 at CSU and had a career-high 26 points while going 10-15 from the field and 3-6 on treys vs. UNLV. He had 17 points vs. SDSU. Saturday he extended his string of consecutive double-digit points games to 11. A transfer from Utah, he has reached double figures in each game he has played since becoming eligible to play on Dec. 16 vs. Utah State. He is now leading the Cougars in scoring at 16.0 points while shooting 47 percent from the floor, 39.5 percent on threes, and 80 percent from the line.

Whiting, Knight Made Strong BYU Debuts

Transfer players Trent Whiting (Utah) and Nate Knight (Kentucky) made their Cougar debuts Dec. 16 vs. Utah State after sitting out the first seven games of the year because of transfer rules. Whiting scored a game-high 22 points on 7-11 shooting, including 4-7 threes, in a team-high 39 minutes in his debut while Knight made a solid contribution with five points and six rebounds in 18 minutes. Neither player had played in a game for more than a year since transferring last fall.

Cleveland's Record

Steve Cleveland is now 56-53 overall in his fourth year, having improved the Cougars in each year since taking over a 1-25 program. With BYU's win over Idaho on Jan. 2 Cleveland went above a .500 winning percentage for the first time since going 1-0 with a win in his first game at San Diego State in 1997. He had evened his winning percentage at .500 twice this year. He went to 50-50 with a win over Boise State in Hawaii before the Cougars suffered back-to-back close defeats to ranked teams. Wins at Weber State and vs. South Alabama brought his record to 52-52 before BYU's last four wins.

Cleveland's Record in Conference Openers

After defeating SDSU last week, Cleveland is 3-1 in conference openers at BYU. The Cougars defeating Tulsa on the road in 1997-98 and lost at Utah in 1998-99 before last year's win at UNLV. This year BYU began league play at home for the first time under Cleveland.

Wesley Moving Up Career Charts

Mekeli Wesley has 1,447 career points, ninth on the all-time BYU list. He needs 67 points to pass Kresimir Cosic into eighth place. He has previously passed Andy Toolson vs. South Alabama into 10th place and moved ahead of Jay Cheesman vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi into ninth. Wesley is sixth all-time at BYU in free throw attempts with 537 and seventh in free throws made with 416. He needs to make 16 more to move past Mike Smith (431) into sixth place and is 66 attempts from passing Fred Roberts into fifth place.

Winning Streak

BYU had its six-game winning streak halted with its loss at CSU Saturday. The six-game streak was BYU's longest since a seven-game victory string during the 1994-95 season. BYU has reached five straight wins four times under coach Cleveland. Two times last year and twice this season. The streak was also tied for the 10th longest streak in the nation. The Cougars have lost consecutive games twice this year and had back-to-back losses on three occasions last season. BYU has not lost more than two consecutive games since losing three straight in February of the 1998-99 season.

• He has led BYU in scoring in the last two games. With his game-high 26 point vs. UNLV he became the Cougars' leading scorer and now averages 16.0 ppg. He has led the Cougars in scoring in three games.

• He was 4-13 at CSU, including 1-6 on threes. He was 10-15 from the floor, including 3-6 on threes, vs. UNLV. He was 5-8 on threes and 6-11 overall vs. SDSU.

Vranes out for the Year

Two-year starting guard Michael Vranes will miss the entire season after a foot injury required two fall surgeries. Vranes played both the point and wing for the Cougars and was the third leading scorer last season and the team's best defender on the perimeter.

Injuries Play Role as Three Players Plan to Redshirt the 2000-01 Season

BYU Head Basketball Coach Steve Cleveland announced Nov. 17 that three players on this year's team - Garner Meads, Jesse Pinegar and Bart Jepsen - plan to redshirt during the 2000-01 season. Meads and Pinegar are both freshmen members of last year's top-20 recruiting class while Jepsen is a sophomore who returned from an LDS Church mission this summer. All three players have experienced injuries that have factored into the decision to redshirt. Meads, a McDonald's High School All-American forward, has had multiple injuries impede his ability to practice. A knee surgery limited his basketball until late summer and a lung injury sustained in only the team's fifth practice has kept the 6-foot-8 forward from any physical activity for the past month. "After meeting with Garner and his family we have determined it is in his best interest to redshirt this season," Cleveland said. "He has not been able to condition because of his lung injury and has also missed nearly all of our practices. He plans to leave on his mission in February, which means he will not enroll in school for the Winter semester." Pinegar, who was a high school teammate of Meads' at Salt Lake City's Brighton High School, suffered a stress fracture in his left foot last week and has a sesmoid (inflamed bone) problem on his right foot. While he will be able to condition and lift weights, the 6-foot-9 forward will not be able to jump and practice for 4-6 weeks. A 6-foot-9 forward, Jepsen has planned on redshirting this year since returning from his mission this summer. While serving his two-year mission, he sustained a broken leg.
