Game 2 - Cougars and Bengals Square off on Tuesday

After opening the 2009-10 season with a 70-60 home win over Bradley, BYU (1-0) men’s basketball will look to make it 2-0 when the Cougars face Idaho State on Tuesday in the Marriott Center at 7:30 p.m. The Bengals opened their season with an 88-68 loss to Iowa State and then lost at Bradley, 74-69. The game will be the 37th meeting between BYU and Idaho State with the Cougars leading the series 30-6, including 12-2 in Provo. Looking at Idaho State

Idaho State has opened the 2009-10 season with two losses on the road — 88-68 at Iowa State and 74-69 at Bradley. The Bengals conclude their three-game season-opening road trip at BYU on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Broderick Gilchrest has led Idaho State in scoring in both games with 21 points at Iowa State and 19 points at Bradley. He is shooting .500 from the free throw line and .824 from the free throw line. Amorrow Morgan is also averaging double figures through two games at 16.5 points per game while Demetrius Monroe is averaging nearly a double-double at 9.5 points and 9.5 boards per contest. Idaho State is averaging 68.5 points while shooting .444 from the field, .200 from downtown and .793 from the free throw line. Bengal opponents are scoring 81.0 points per contest, shooting .527 from the field and .486 from downtown with 18 made threes.

Idaho State’s Last OUting — Bradley’s Late Three propels Braves to 74-69 Win Over ISU

Peoria, IL --- Sam Maniscalco came off a screen and drilled a three-pointer late in the shot clock with 1:14 to go to give Bradley a five-point lead, and that was just enough as the Bradley Braves, owners of 10 postseason wins over the last four years, barely nipped Idaho State 74-69 in front of 9,019 fans at Carver Arena. The Bengals had taken their last lead at 63-62 when Broderick Gilchrest hit a jumper in the lane with 2:55 left, but Bradley answered with two free throws just 19 seconds later to take the lead for good at 64-63. The Braves then got a three-point play from Chris Roberts to make it 67-63 but Gilchrest answered with a layup with 1:41 left to cut it to 67-65. After a timeout, Maniscalco came off a screen and drilled a three-pointer, the last of their 11, that pretty much put the game away at 70-65 with 1:14 left. Amorrow Morgan cut it to three with 52 seconds left, but Bradley hit three of four free throws in the final 26 seconds, and Gilchrest got ISU one last basket with 8.4 left. The three pointers really hurt ISU, as Bradley, who have hit at least 300 as a team in each of the last two years, the only Missouri Valley Conference team to do so, hit 11, including four off the bench by Dodie Dunson, who didn’t hit a basket against Brigham Young in Bradley’s opening loss, but hit 4-of-6 threes against ISU as he tied for the team lead with 16 points. Still O’Brien was pleased with the effort that saw ISU leading late in front of a big crowd on the road as ISU shot well at .469 from the field, outrebounded Bradley by 10 36-26, and committed just 11 turnovers. The Bengals were led again by Gilchrest, who had 19 points, and Amorrow Morgan, who added 18. Demetrius Monroe made his first start of the season and had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. For the Braves, Dunson and Andrew Warren each had 16, Maniscalco had 13, and Chris Roberts and Dyricus Simms-Edwards each had 12.

Friday’s game will be the 37th meeting between BYU and Idaho State. The Cougars lead 30-6 overall and 12-2 in Provo. BYU has won the last 11 meetings at home and has not lost to Idaho State in Provo since 1939. The Cougars have won the last five meetings in the series and 20 of 21 overall, including last season’s 85-65 win in Pocatello. Jonathan Tavernari paced BYU last year with 23 points and six rebounds while Jimmer Fredette pitched in 19 points and six assists.

Fredette Named MWC Player of the Week (Nov. 16)

COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU junior Jimmer Fredette has been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games through November 15. This is the third weekly accolade of his career. A 6-2 guard from Glen Falls, N.Y., Fredette led the Cougars to a season-opening win over Bradley (70-60) last Friday, Nov. 13. He scored a game-high 25 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while also recording five rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes. Fredette scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half, while also dishing out three assists. He also went 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the second half, including hitting his last 12 attempts, six of which came in the final five minutes of the contest. Fredette has 805 career points and earned first-team all-MWC honors in 2008-09. He averaged 16.2 points and 4.1 assists while shooting .382 from downtown and .847 from the free throw line. Fredette was voted the MWC Preseason Player of the Year by the media for the 2009-10 season.

Road Success

In 2008-09, BYU set an MWC record for road wins in a season with nine. The Cougars were 9-3 overall in road games, their best record in road games since 1987-88 when they were 9-3. Nine road wins is tied for second most in a season at BYU behind the 1949-50 and 1979-80 teams that won 10 road games. In the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons combined, BYU is 17-8 on the road, including 11-5 in MWC games. The 17 road victories are the most in a two-year span since the Cougars won 18 in the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons.
