SALT LAKE -- Seniors Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery posted career performances as the No. 10 BYU men’s basketball team defeated rival Utah 104-79 Tuesday at the Huntsman Center.
With 12:47 remaining in the first half, senior Jackson Emery recorded is 196th career steal and passed BYU legend Danny Ainge for the all-time BYU lead. Emery, who averages 2.7 steals per game this season, would add one more to bring his career total to 197. He also added 20 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Senior All-American Jimmer Fredette led the Cougars with a season-high 47 points on 16-of-28 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three-point range, while adding four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Fredette now leads the nation in scoring with 26.1 ppg.
Fredette and Emery reached significant career scoring milestones at Utah. Emery became the 42nd member of BYU's 1,000-point club when he hit a three with 6:55 remaining, his final points of the night. He has exactly 1,000 career points. Fredette became the fourth BYU basketball player to reach 2,000 career points when he hit the first of two free throws with 3:07 remaining. He hit the second of two free throws for his final point of the night and to give him 2,001 career points.
"This is a great team win for a lot of reasons," BYU Head Coach Dave Rose said. "This is a great basketball team when Jimmer's (Fredette) playing like that and the other guys are engaged like they were."
Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies also scored in double digits, both posting 13 points apiece, while Kyle Collinsworth added 11 points with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Scoring was back and forth to start the contest. Fredette led the Cougars early with eight quick points despite the Cougars falling behind 21-17 at the 10:37 mark in the first half.
However, the Cougars came back to take a 25-23 lead on the heels of an 8-2 run that was highlighted by back-to-back treys by Emery and Fredette. Emery finished the first half with six points on 2-of-3 shooting from three-point range and three assists, while freshman Kyle Collinsworth added nine points and three rebounds.
BYU’s biggest lead of the half came after Fredette hit a half-court buzzer beater as time expired to put BYU up 53-42. Fredette would finish the half with 32 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. It was his highest career first-half total, besting the 24 points he scored in the first half against Arizona last season.
"It was one of those special nights," Fredette said. "The basket felt real big and my teammates did a great job of getting me the ball in good situations."
The Cougars, who shot 8-of-14 (.571) from long range in the first half, stayed hot in the second half, taking a 61-49 lead at the 15:10 mark and would not lead by less than 10 points for the rest of the game, running away with their third-consecutive conference win.
With the victory, BYU takes a 126-125 lead in the all-time series against the Utes and pulls BYU five points closer to Utah in the Deseret First Duel, which now stands at 16-11.
The Cougars return to action Jan. 18 when they host TCU. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on The Mtn.
