PROVO -- On a night that celebrated his Cougar career steals record, BYU senior guard Jackson Emery scored 17 points as No. 9 BYU defeated TCU, 83-67, on Tuesday in the Marriott Center.

Emery was honored before the game for becoming BYU’s all-time steals leader and the 42nd player in BYU history to score 1,000 points, accomplishing both achievements in the Cougars’ last game at Utah.

At home against TCU, the senior sank his first four three-point attempts on his way to shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Emery tacked on two more steals to his record total while adding three rebounds and one assist.

"Jackson Emery is the most underrated player in the league," TCU head coach Jim Christian said. "To me, Emery was the key. I told Coach Rose before the game that if I could trade for anyone in the league, I'd want Jackson Emery."

All five Cougar starters scored in double figures. Senior guard Jimmer Fredette led the way with 21 points and a team-high five assists while the BYU backcourt of Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, and added nine rebounds apiece.

But it was freshman guard Kyle Collinsworth who sparked BYU (18-1, 4-0 MWC) early on. After giving up the first score of the game, BYU went on a 10-0 run with Collinsworth scoring four points to help BYU to an early 10-2 lead.

After Cougar forward Brandon Davies blocked a TCU (10-10, 1-4) shot at the rim, Collinsworth rebounded the ensuing fast-break three-point try by Fredette, giving the ball back to the senior guard for another trey, this one falling through the hoop. On the Horned Frogs’ next possession, Collinsworth took the ball away in the frontcourt and hit Fredette down the court for a layup, giving BYU a 22-7 lead at the 11:38 mark.

"We were able to get everyone engaged and that's something we want to have happen," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "You can't script it, but our guys shared the ball, played hard, executed our game plan early and we were able to get a nice lead."

Collinsworth finished the first half without missing a shot, converting 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 at the line for eight points, adding seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in just 18 minutes. He would add two more points and two more rebounds in the second half.

The two baskets by Fredette equaled five of the senior’s personal 10-0 run. Fredette tacked on an addition three-pointer and a two-point jumper, extending BYU’s lead to 25-7 midway through the first period.

"I was really happy with how we came out in the first five or eight minutes of the game after a bye," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "Defensively, we were really engaged. We guarded them hard, rebounded well and got off to a good start offensively."

Ronnie Moss, the only TCU player with more than nine points for the visitors with 27, led the Horned Frogs to within 13 points of the Cougars with just under 13 minutes left in the game, but Fredette converted four-straight free throws awarded to BYU after TCU was called for a personal and then a technical foul to put BYU back in control the rest of the way.

BYU shot 49-percent from the field, 44 percent from three and 81-percent from the free throw line while outrebounding TCU, 42-34.

The win is BYU’s 14th-straight over TCU and extends the Cougars’ current winning streak to eight games. BYU will attempt to extend its streak at Colorado State this Saturday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on the mtn. and on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
