The number one rule with recruiting is that ONLY BYU coaches and Athletic Department staff members are allowed to have contact with any recruits.  Boosters may alert BYU coaches of prospects who they believe would make a positive addition to one of BYU’s teams; however, they may not make any contact with the recruit.

The NCAA restricts coaches on the timing, type and frequency of contact with recruits.  The table below gives a quick visual reference for coaches regarding these restrictions.

*In men's basketball, a coach may send a text message beginning September 1 of the prospect's junior year in high school. In all other sports, coaches are not permitted to send a text message, use instant messenger or electronic chat, or comment publicly through Facebook/Myspace/Twitter to a prospect until the calendar day after that prospect signs a National Letter of Intent (NLI) with BYU. 

BYU questionnaires/camp information--may be sent to a prospect of any age, at any time.

General correspondence(including e-mail, Facebook direct inbox messages, regular mail, pre-enrollment information, etc.)—may be sent to a prospect beginning September 1 of their junior year in high school.

Phone calls--phone calls differ per sport.  See sport specific explanation below.

Football: A coach may call a prospect (or the prospect's parents) once between April 15-May 31 of the prospect's junior year in high school.  After September 1 of the beginning of the prospect's senior year in high school, a coach may call a prospect once/week. During a "contact period" a coach may call unlimited.

Men's Basketball: A coach may call a prospect (or the prospect's parents) beginning with June 15 at the conclusion of the prospect's sophomore year in high school, unlimited.

Women's Basketball: A coach may call a prospect (or the prospect's parents) a few times prior to the prospect's senior year in high school, as outlined in NCAA Bylaw 13.1.3.1.4. Thereafter, a coach may call once/week. During a "contact period" a coach may call unlimited. 

Other Sports: A coach may call a prospect (or the prospect's parents) once/week beginning with July 1 after completion of the prospect's junior year in high school. During a "contact period" a coach may call unlimited.

Coaches may call two-year/four-year college prospects once per week. (Four-year college prospects may only be contacted after permission to contact has been provided by the prospect's current four-year college.) During a "contact period" a coach may call unlimited.

**Please take note that while coaches are held to the above restrictions, prospects may, on their own initiative, contact a coach at any time, through any means they wish.  A prospect may call a coach, on their own initiative, at any time, at any age.  A prospect may send an e-mail to a coach if they are a freshman in high school; however, be aware that a coach would be restricted from responding due to NCAA rules.

RECRUITING PERIODS DEFINED

Contact Period--During a contact period, BYU coaching staff members may evaluate and contact prospective student-athletes (PSA). This includes visiting PSAs at their homes, schools or other off-campus sites. In sports other than football, BYU may contact a PSA no more than three times at any off-campus site. In football, BYU is limited to seven in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts with a PSA at any site. However, a member of the BYU football staff may not contact a prospect more than once a week, and may not visit any one high school more than once per week. In all other sports, coaches can have contact only three times in one week.

Evaluation Period--During an evaluation period, off-campus recruiting contact is not allowed. BYU coaching staff members may assess the academic qualifications and athletic ability of a prospect off BYU's campus. Coaches may speak with high school counselors and high school coaches, but may not speak with PSAs. In all sports other than football and basketball, BYU is limited to evaluating each prospect only four times during the academic year. BYU football staff members are limited to three evaluations during the academic year; one time in the fall, and two times during the April 15 through May 31 evaluation period. In basketball, BYU has a total of seven (contacts and evaluations combined) recruiting opportunities per PSA; however, not more than three of the seven opportunities may be contacts.

Quiet Period--During a quiet period, BYU staff members are permitted to make in-person contacts with PSAs only on BYU's campus. Off-campus contacts and evaluations are not permitted during the quiet period.

Dead Period--During a dead period, it is not permissible for anyone associated with BYU to have an in-person contact with a PSA. Coaches may write or call a PSA during a dead period.
